Alvin E. Cooper - Lakewood, Colorado, formerly of Dubuque died Friday, August 25th, 2017.

In keeping with his wishes, private services were held, with burial following in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, where military rites were accorded. 

Al was born in Dubuque on November 27th, 1928, son of Raymond E. and Rose L. (Stant) Cooper.

He served in the U.S. Army where he earned a Purple Heart during the Korean War. After returning to Dubuque he married the love of his life, Janaan M. McCarthy at St. Patrick’s Church on May 22nd, 1954. She preceded him in death on Wednesday, September 17th, 1997. 

During the 1950’s and early 1960’s Al was an avid and very enthusiastic stock car driver around the Tri-State area, who competed in many exciting races at the Dubuque Sports Bowl.

Al worked for the Dubuque Packing Company for over 30 years, while owning and operating Cooper’s Distributing Company before retiring in 1982. He and Janaan relocated to Colorado in 1984 were they lived for the next seven years before he again retired, from the former Kaiser Hill-Rocky Flats Plant in 1991.

Surviving are his sons, Alvin J. Cooper, Raymond E. Cooper (Danele) and Gary E. Cooper; five grandsons and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two nieces, two nephews and several cousins.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, a grandson Patrick J. and his three sisters, Azetta B. Clark, Alberta M. (Hayward) Clark, and Sylvia N. Williams, his three brothers-in-law, Raymond Clark, Edward “Eddie” Williams, and Howard “Sunny” Clark as well as three nephews. 

Al will be remembered most for his devotion to his wife and family, and his loyalty to God and country. 

The family would like to thank the staff at Julia Temple Healthcare Center, Englewood, Colorado and Dubuque neighbors, friends and other special relatives, especially Marilyn and Donald Wubben, Judy Dunne, Betty Schuster, Lois Johns, Connie Nolan, Patricia Whaley, Mike Whaley and Judy (Delaney) Cooper for the care, friendship and kindness shown toward Al and the family over the years.
