BERNARD, Iowa — Carl F. Merfeld, 80, of Bernard, Iowa, passed away Friday, September 15, 2017, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, September 18, 2017, at Saint Patrick’s Garryowen Catholic Church, with Fr. Douglas Loecke and Fr. Xavier Dieter, OSCO officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the church. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is in charge of arrangements.
Carl was a lifelong resident of Bernard, Iowa, He was born on October 1, 1936, the son of Leo and Lettie (Rogers) Merfeld. Carl did veterinary work at the Clinic in Bernard for many years. He was a member of the Bernard Commercial Club and Saint Patrick’s Altar and Rosary Society. Carl had a wonderful disposition and could often be found sitting out on the front porch watching the goings on in Bernard.
He is survived by his 2 sisters, Gerry Skahill, of Dubuque, and Madonna (Paul) McAndrews, of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Paul (Grace) Kane; 3 sisters-in-law, Eileen Merfeld, Mazie Merfeld and Mary Ann Merfeld, many nieces and nephews, his special friends Bob and Carol Hutchins, Dr. Tom White, DVM, and his many faithful friends in the Bernard community.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Leonard, Orland and Wilfred Merfeld; five sisters, Margaret (Tom) Buchanan, Grace Kane, Mary (Al) Tigges, Laverne Merfeld and Eileen (Allan) Redmond; a brother-in-law Robert Skahill; and a sister-in-law Phyllis Merfeld.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Bernard Fire Department or New Melleray Abbey.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Stonehill Care Center and Dr. Matthew Kirkendall and his nurse Kate for all the great care they gave to Carl.
