Charles Vincent Plein, 77, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on December 1st, 2017 at home from natural causes.

Family and friends may gather from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 8th, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with military honors by the American Legion Post #6 at 7:00 p.m.

Charles was born on May 9, 1940 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Valentine and Luella (Fagen) Plein. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1958. He married Hannelore Roll on July 15, 1967 in Dubuque.

He served is the US Army from 1959 to 1965 and was stationed at Fort Knox, KY and Border Patrol at Bad Kissingen in Germany. He was a member of the 14th Armored Calvary Regiment 2D Squadron.

He worked at Ay McDonald, Dubuque Packing Company, Farmland and FDL. He served as president of Union Local 758 Operating Engineers.

Charles enjoyed hiking at the Mines of Spain, gardening, the Green Bay Packers, hunting, fishing and just enjoying nature; but most of all he enjoyed being with his family. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his two children, Thomas (Danielle) Plein and Lisa Plein, both of Dubuque. Seven grandchildren, Alex, Alicia, and Jay Plein, Kalee Kerper, Megan, Colin and Jeffrey Niemer; and his brother Clem Plein, of Dubuque.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Hannelore; step mother; two sister Shirley Vosberg and Marian Stietz; and two brothers William and Richard Plein.

The family wishes to thank Shannon Timmeran, ARNP and the staff at the Dubuque VA Clinic; Dr. Janes; Dr. Ramabadran, Dr. Manzel, Dr. Sara Loetscher and their staffs for all their wonderful care they gave to Charles.
