Cole Jon Haan, 18, of Epworth, Iowa passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics on April 13, 2015 at 12:20 a.m.  surrounded by family and friends.

 Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 17th, 2015 at St. John the Baptist, Placid in Epworth, Iowa with Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Iowa National Guard, and an honor guard escort by the Iowa Patriot Guard Riders. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 16th from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a prayer and sharing service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

 Cole was born on December 9, 1996 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Clay and Kristine (Fransen) Haan.

 Cole was involved with the Cascade Karate Club, helping teach classes two days a week. He received his 2nd degree blackbelt in January of this year. He participated in cross country, track, and the high school bowling team. Cole was an active member of the Cascade High School Music Programs playing the Tuba, Baritone, Trumpet, Piano, and Clarinet, as well as singing in the choir. He participated in speech competition every year, doing mime and choral reading. Cole volunteered at the Knights of Columbus to help with Bingo in Dubuque. He was a blood donor, plasma donor, and organ donor. He was an active member of the Holy Spirit CEW Community as well as a Eucharistic minister.

 Cole was a member of the Iowa Army National Guard, having joined on his 17th Birthday. He completed Basic Training at Ft. Sill, OK on August 29, 2014. He planned to join the ROTC at Gonzaga University in Spokane WA where he was accepted to start this fall after graduating from Cascade High School this coming May. He will be receiving military honors.

 He is survived by his parents, Clay R. and Kristine “Kris” Haan, of Epworth IA, his siblings; Lena Haan of Spokane WA and Cory Haan, of Epworth IA. Grandparents, Richard and Gloria Haan, of Kimberling City MO, Rosie Fransen, of Dubuque IA, Jim and Brenda La Jeunesse, of Camdenton MO, Great Grandparents, Charles and Jackie Smith, of Ankeny IA. His aunts and uncles; Leslie and Tim Dague, of Bellevue IA, Mark and Linda Fransen, of Worthington IA, Kim and Jeff Schmidt, of Dubuque IA, Crystal Mosher, of Ankeny IA, Valerie and James Weidner, of Camdenton MO, and numerous cousins, great aunts and uncles.

 He was proceeded in death by Grandfather Tom Fransen, great grandparents, and several great aunts and uncles.

 Thank you to the first responders of Delaware County, University of Iowa Hospital, and the overwhelming support of the community.

 A Cole Jon Haan memorial fund has been set up through Cascade High School
