Donald W. Oliver, 91 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Unity Point Health, Finley Hospital.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 26th at St. Columbkilles Catholic Church with Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post #6. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25th, 2016 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m.
He was born on May 5th, 1925 to William and Erna (Schobert) Oliver in Dubuque, Iowa. He attended Bryant School, Washington Jr. High School and Dubuque Senior High School.
He married Delores Strong on August 2, 1947 at St. Columbkilles Church in Dubuque.
Donald was a US Navy Veteran serving during WWII. He worked for John Deere Dubuque Works for 37 years, 19 of those years where in the Foundry. He was a member of the UAW Local 94 and life member of the Amvets.
Don was an avid golfer and golfed until the age of 88; he enjoyed the Chicago Cubs and Bears along with watching cowboy shows. He loved to tell war stories and was proud he went on the Honor Flight. He was a wonderful husband and father.
He is survived by his wife Delores “Dolly” Oliver; children, Connie (Paul) Tauke, of Dubuque, Sharon (Mark) Woolhether, of Fond du Lac, WI, Daniel (Penny) Oliver, of Brooksville, FL, Martin (David Bailey) Oliver, of Chicago, IL, and Brian Oliver of Davenport. One sister Ruth Falk, of Arizona, along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Donald Jr.; two brothers, Francis and Harold.
In lieu of flowers a Donald Oliver memorial fund will be established.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to, Dr. Victoria Famuyide, and to all the doctors, nurses and staff of Finley Hospital for all their wonderful care and kindness they gave to Don.
