Father Louis Trzil, 91, died on May 3, 2017, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Church in Cedar Rapids, with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Archbishop Michael Jackels will officiate and Rev. Msgr. Thomas Toale as homilist. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
Father Trzil was born April 10, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, the eldest son of Louis and Georgianna (Nejdl) Trzil’s four children. He received his early education at Catholic schools in Cedar Rapids. He attended St. Procopius College, Lisle, Illinois, and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque in 1946. He studied theology at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and was ordained on May 27, 1950, by Archbishop Leo Binz in Dubuque.
His first assignment was as associate pastor at Holy Trinity in Protivin and Holy Cross in Schley (1950-55). He then served at St. Wenceslaus in Cedar Rapids (1955-60).
Father Trzil served as pastor of the following parishes; Assumption of the BVM in Little Turkey, 1960-62; St. Joseph in Prairieburg, 1962-68; St. Wenceslaus in Spillville, 1968-77; St. Wenceslaus in Cedar Rapids, 1977-83; Holy Trinity in Protivin, 1983-88; Holy Cross in Schley, 1985-88; St. Patrick in Buffalo Center and Sacred Heart in Woden, 1988-90; Immaculate Conception in Wexford and St. Ann-St. Joseph in Harpers Ferry from 1991-2010 and St. Pius V Parish in Cherry Mound from 1999-2010.
He was well known for his concern for people in need, volunteering and assisting at the following: Pine Ridge Native American Reservation, South Dakota, the Appalachian region in Kentucky, Alcoholics Anonymous, the Association for Retarded Children (Arc) in Iowa, and Luster Heights Minimum Security.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jerome.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary Reu (Cedar Rapids) and Rose Ann Trzil, S.S.S.F (Milwaukee); nieces and nephews Lisa and Mark, Steve and Pam, Janice and Jody, Joe; Seven great-nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to Pine Ridge Native American Reservation.
