Frederick H. "Fred" Schilling 87, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 20th, 2017 at Ennoble Manor surrounded by his family.
Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 24th, 2017 at St. Joseph The Worker with Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Centralia. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, April 23rd, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 4:00 p.m.
Fred was born on September 16, 1929 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Fred and Florence (Winters) Schilling. He married Shirley Ann Oberhoffer on January 23, 1951 and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this past January. He worked for the former Dubuque Packing Company for 39 years and was a member of the Meat Packing Union.
Together Fred and Shirley built their loving home, he was a loving husband and father to their seven children. Fred enjoyed to play, horseshoes, hunt with his sons and friends, family bonfires, traveling, and read. He also enjoyed to garden and was famous for his asparagus and rhubarb.
Those left to cherish his memory are, his loving wife of 67 years, Shirley; children, Terry (Dee) Schilling, of La Motte, Iowa, Lynn Buchholz, of Chanhassen, MN, Gary (Sharon Koltes) Schilling, of La Motte, Cindy (Edwin) Braude, of Independence, Ohio, Susan (fiancé Robert Hurley) Schilling of Townsend, Montana, Barb (Randy) Schoop, of Dubuque, and Larry (Carey) Schilling, of Epworth, Iowa. Grandchildren, Lisa, Jason, Stacy, Jessica, Kara, Gina, Myles, Trenton, Alaina, Miranda, Amber, Corey, Jacob, and Hailey. Great grandchildren, Tyler, Bella, Julieann, Connor, Kate, Ryder, Maddox, Lyla, Jaxon and Ava. His sisters, Darlene Berzle of Dubuque, Rita McFadden, of Lancaster, PA, Carol Schmitt, of Peosta, Iowa and Jean (Virgil) Hansen, of Dubuque. One brother John (Vicky) Schilling, of Rickardsville; sister-in-law, Madelyn Schilling, of Peosta and Dorothy Schilling, of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Wilma Schilling and Mary (Matt) Maas; three brothers James Schilling, David (Joyce) Schilling and Robert Schilling; brothers-in-law Pete McFadden, George Schmitt and Joe Berzle.
In lieu of flowers a Fred Schilling memorial fund will be established.
The family wishes to thank Ennoble Manor for their wonderful compassionate care. Also to our supportive family and friends, thank you! He was an amazing man who gave love and kindness freely and he will be greatly missed.
