Harold Engles Obituary

Harold D. Engles, 98, of Dubuque, Iowa rode his last train to Heaven on rails of solid gold on February 15, 2019. Private family burial will be held at Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Harold was born on September 3, 1920 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Ralph and Freda (Hahn) Engles. In 1938 he graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. He married Edna Mae Hill on March 7th, 1944 and she preceded him in death.

For 47 years he worked on the railroad for Great Western – Northwestern Rail and was a member of Knight Templar. After retirement he and Edna moved to Hawaii to enjoy sun and fun for 20 years.

One of Harold’s greatest joys was giving his daughter rides on the engine of the Great Western & Northwestern Rail Roads. On his last day he let her ride and switch box cars as long as she blew the whistle the correct way. They also enjoyed being backstage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn., where he had many conversations with the late Charlie Walker and the late Ernst Tubb.

He is survived by his daughter Sher Ree Engles Kenneally, of Dubuque.

Those left before him now waiting at the rail station are his wife Edna; son-in-law Mike Keneally; brother-in-law Rodney Hill; sister-in-law Kay Hill; nephew Randy Hill and his very special companion “Butchie” his dog.

“May Mr. Roy Acuff’s Great Speckled Bird be guiding you. Keep your hand on the throttle and eyes on the rail.” One great Railroad man!!
