Harold L. Williams, 78 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away at 1:55 a.m. at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque on Friday, April 21, 2017 surrounded by his loving family after bravely fighting a long battle with lymphoma.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 25th, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Major Tom Mason and Major Kay Mason officiating. Committal prayers and military honors by American Legions Post #6 will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Family and friends may visit after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home until time of service.
He was born on April 15, 1939 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of George and Blanche (Birky) Williams. Harold attended school at City High in Iowa City. He enlisted with the US Navy from 1957-1961 and served on the USS Bennington.
He married Virginia Zachmeyer, in Iowa City on August 31, 1974. Harold was a truck driver for over 30 years and drove for Swiss Valley until retirement. He was a member of the Teamsters 421 and American Legion Post 6.
Harold loved being outside in nature doing all kinds of activities. He especially loved feeding the birds. He was a great handyman, loved to help his family with projects.
Harold was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of 42 years, daughters, Deborah (Brad) Gilpin, of Iowa City, Coleen (Mike) Scherrer, of Riverside, Kim Schmit, of Dubuque, Brenda Lee (Ray) Gibson, of Heathrow, FL and one son, Ray Steege, of West Union, IA. His brother Rolland Williams, of Elberon, IA and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and a daughter, Joni Williams.
Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society & The Salvation Army.
