Janet Kay Smith

Janet Kay (McVey) Smith, 76 of rural Key West passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 17th at Mercy Hospital with her husband, James Smith, and Pastor Linda VonFumetti at her side.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 22nd at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Pastor Linda Vonfumetti officiating. Burial will follow in Rockdale United Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 21st at Leonard Funeral Home.

Janet was born August 5, 1939, in Roseville, Illinois, to Charles and Ruth (Wilkerson) McVey. She spent her early childhood there and around Berwick. After her family moved to Smithshire, she attended Kirkwood High School and graduated with the class of 1957. Taking a job as bookkeeper with Smith Implement in Kirkwood, she met the youngest Smith son, her future husband. They married in 1959 and lived in Kirkwood until 1967. Ever since, they lived in Dubuque, Iowa.

Janet was active with the Rockdale United Methodist church, and served in various offices and was treasurer for the United Methodist Women for many years. Janet enjoyed her family and friends, league bowling, card club, RV camping, and winters in Arizona.

She is survived by her husband Jim and children: Douglas (Rebecca) of Palo Alto, California; Lori (Gregg) Livermore of Davenport; and Michael of Dubuque. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Jennifer (Nick) Stull; Justin Livermore; and Lila Smith. She is survived by her sister, Barbara (Jerry) Baker of Dickson, Tennessee, and several nieces and nephews across the country.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Richard J. Smith, and her seven brothers and one sister.

Her family would like to thank the Key West Fire and EMS and the compassionate care given by Mercy Medical staff.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be donated to the Rockdale Methodist Church.
