Joe Jude Sweeney, 81 of Asbury, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 02, 2016 at home.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 7th at the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6th, 2016 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will held at 3:00 p.m.

Jude was born on April 4th, 1935 in Bernard, Iowa the son of Joseph and Irene (O’Brien) Sweeney. He married Lois Manders on January 28, 1956 at St. Patrick’s Church, North Garryowen. She was the love of his life. They spent over 60 wonderful years together.

Jude was a heavy equipment operator for 58 years and was a member of the Operating Engineer’s Local 234. He was part of two card clubs and was a parish member at the Church of the Resurrection.

He enjoyed helping others and was known by many as “Poppy Joe”. He lived to work and loved spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed for all his kindness, generosity, volunteer work and his mischievous sense of humor. Jude was a proud Irishman and loved by all.

He is survived by his wife Lois; children, Tammie (Bryan) Aivazian, of Casper, Wyoming, Sandy (Wes) Siebe, of Peosta, Tara (Steve) Sisbach, of Peosta, Jill (fiancé Joe Ungs) Sweeney-Keil, of Dubuque and Julie (Lyle) Daughetee, of Robins, Iowa. Grandchildren, Tristan (Sam) Waters, Grant (Kathrine) Aivazian, Reed (Meggie) Aivazian, Hannah (Brig) Moore, Alyssa (Alex) Wiezorek, Mackenzie Keil, Logan Daughetee, Kennedy Jo Keil, and Aaron Daughetee. 7 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Sr. Marian Sweeney, PBVM of Dubuque and Lu Roth of Sun City, AZ and a brother Ray (Chris) Sweeney, of Ronoke,VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law; Louis and Bendina Manders and a grandson Chad Sisbach.
