John E. “Jack” O’Hara, 76, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Unity Point Health, Finley Hospital.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, at the Church of the Nativity with Rev. Scott Bullock officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery with full military detail accorded by American Legion Post #6. Visitation will be on Friday, November 8 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with a wake service at 7:45 p.m. A parish rosary will be said at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Nativity.

He was born on August 3, 1937 in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, the son of Edward and Margaret (Connelly) O'Hara. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1958. He married Mary Collins on June 10, 1961 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Dubuque. He worked for the former Dubuque Packing Company for 42 years before retiring in 2000.

Jack loved joking, laughing, and spending time with family, friends, and neighbors.  He delighted and took great pride in his grandchildren and great grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to attend their school and sporting events.  He endured the last few months with dignity, courage, humor, and strength surrounded by family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary, five children: Dan (Sue) O'Hara, of Dubuque, Cory (Dan) Kelly of Ankeny, Mike O'Hara of Des Moines, Jim (Samantha) O'Hara of Ankeny, and Steve (Jennifer) O'Hara of Rochester, MN; twelve grandchildren: Ryan O'Hara, Kaitlin (Nathan) Fell, Molly O'Hara, Megan Kelly, Allison Kelly, Kelsie Kelly, Daniel Kelly, Grace O'Hara, Luke O'Hara, Frank O'Hara, Kathleen O'Hara, and Ellen O'Hara. He is also survived by two great grandchildren: Jack O'Hara and Thomas Fell, two sisters: Leona (Dale) Ehlers, of Dubuque, and Shirley (Denny) Donovan, of East Dubuque, IL and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Richard “Dick” (Mary Ann) O'Hara.

In lieu of flowers a John E. O’Hara memorial fund has been established.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to family and friends for their loving care, kindness and support. The family also appreciates and gives thanks to the health care professionals for the wonderful care given to Jack.
