Joseph C. "Joe" Knockel, 97 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center.

 

Funeral mass will be at 10:30a.m. Friday, April 10th at the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet with military honors by the Cascade American Legion Post #528.   Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9th at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a parish wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m.

 

Joe was born on June 13, 1917 in La Motte, Iowa the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Smith) Knockel. He married Mary Haxmeier, on May 22, 1965 at the Church of the Nativity. She preceded him in death on August 11, 2001.

 

He served in the US Army during WWII along with his four brothers. He worked for the Dubuque Packing Company for 39 years and was a member of the UFCW Local 150A and the American Legion Post 528 of Cascade.

 

Joe was an avid bow hunter, who enjoyed being outdoors and gardening. He always had the potatoes planted on Good Friday.

 

He is survived by his three sisters, Irene Carnahan, of Cascade, Leona “Shorty” Gordon, of Dubuque, and Rita Kauder, of Cascade, along with many nieces and nephews.  

 

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his sister Marie Giegerich and his four brothers, Howard, Walter, Leo, and Elmer.

 

Memorials may be given to the Church of the Resurrection.

 

The family would like to thank all of Joe’s friends, and neighbors especially Barney, and Jane, his family especially his companion and sister Shorty and great niece Chris for always looking out and caring for Joe.
