Leonard R. Downey, 79 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Hawkeye Care Center.
Gathering of family and friends will be on Friday, July 15th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Deacon Bill Hickson officiating and military detail accorded the Dubuque Marine Corps League.
Leonard was born on August 28, 1936 in Texas the son of Pierson and Lillan (Thrilkeld) Downey. He served in the US Navy from 1954 to 1959 and married Carol Anthony on June 27, 1958 in Folkston, GA.
He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9663 and the Disabled Veterans Association Chapter 1AG. For many years he worked as an auto salesman for Anthony Pontiac and later retired from Sears.
Leonard loved spending time in “His” garden, almost as much as the neighbor dog Homer.
He is survived by his wife Carol, his granddaughter Kaitlin Downey, great grandson Peter Drew Huppert; sisters-in-law Betty Crenshaw, Donita Cilch and Susan (Ken) Riedel along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents, a daughter Dianna Downey, son Drew Pierson Downey, three brothers and two sisters.
The family wishes to thank his good friend Dennis for years of friendship; and to his neighbors Patty Kass and Mike & Maribeth Gerdeman for all their care and assistance over the years.
