Loras Edwin Mitchell, 88 of St. Catherine’s, Iowa passed away September 19, 2017 at home.

The Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 12:00 p.m., at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Dubuque with Father Philip Mensah officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday September 22nd, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 4:00 p.m.  Burial will take place after the funeral mass in the St. Catherine’s Church Cemetery.

Loras was born December 11, 1929 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Edwin and Florence (Hilkin) Mitchell.

He married Ann Joiner December 1, 1951 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Dubuque.

Loras was employed as an Iron Worker and worked on bridges. He started in working at St. Catherine’s building the tower and later traveling through the country doing iron work. He later retired in 1993 and moved back to St. Catherine’s. He loved deer hunting and fishing trips, as well as a good game of Euchre. Mitch also loved to watch sports. There was always a game of baseball or football on. His wife thought that was the only channel they ever got. Mitch could also fix “rig” anything. He had a knack for getting it done or making it work.

He is survived by his wife Ann; his children Barb (Loras) Manders, of St. Catherine’s, Belva (Jeannie Costanza) Mitchell, of New Jersey, Pete (Julia) Mitchell, of Las Vegas, NV; Grandchildren Martin (Tressa) Manders, JoAnn (Kevin) Herrig, Linda Manders, Jeff (Dawn) Manders, Richard (Cindy) Manders, Shaina Mitchell, Steven Mitchell, Pam (Mitch) Hayes & Kenny (Julia) Mitchell; 17 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren; his sister Gloria Lenstra; and brother John (Rose) Mitchell.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son Darwin, and his sister Mary Maiden.

In lieu of flowers a Loras Mitchell memorial fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Molly Manders for her care and comfort and a special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque.
