Our Mom was born in Dubuque, Iowa on July 23, 1924, the daughter of Nicholas and Florence (Trierweiler) Freiburger. She married Louis F. Schmidt, from Saint Donatus, on November 29, 1944 at Saint Joseph Key West. He preceded her in death on April 24, 2008. Mom was educated in the Dubuque and Dubuque County Schools.

She worked for several local families during her youth. Mom and Dad farmed in Zwingle before moving to Key West where they eventually built our family home. Mom was a member of the Saint Joseph Key West Parish and Rosary Society. Our Mom was best known for her Apple and Pear Pies. She was an avid canner of the multiple vegetables and fruits from Dad’s gardens. Mom had a green thumb for house plants. Our Mom was known as a “social butterfly” by her friends in her apartment building. She enjoyed playing bingo and being a bingo caller. Above all was her love of family. She especially loved spending time with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children Kenny Schmidt, Dennis (Lois) Schmidt, both of Dubuque, Judy Asay, of Olathe, KS, Joyce (Mike) Leverence, of Maricopa, AZ, and Marlene (Rick) Von Fumetti, of Dubuque; a daughter-in-law Robin Schmidt, of Dubuque; son-in-law Rich Meyer, of Eldridge, IA; 16 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 8 step great grandchildren; a sister Marie Hoffmann; two sisters-in-law Kay Freiburger and Erna Schmidt, along with many nieces and nephews.

Mom was preceded in death by our father Louis, her daughter Debbie, her son Dale, a daughter-in-law Patricia, grandson Jason, her parents, two sisters Lucille and Evelyn and two brothers Clarence and Alvin.

In lieu of flowers a Lorraine Schmidt memorial fund has been established.

Thank you to the nurses and staff of Hawkeye Care and Hospice of Dubuque along with Dr. Mark Moore and his nurses Alison and Sandy for all the loving care you gave to our Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma.
