Margaret J. "Marge" O'Connell, 80, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Monday, May 1st, 2017 at Stone Hill Care Center in Dubuque.
A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 5th, 2017 at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. Dwayne Thoman officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4th, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 4:00 p.m.
Marge was born on June 16, 1936, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Abitz) Brimeyer. She received her education in Dubuque Schools and graduated in 1954 from Immaculate Conception Academy. She married Patrick O'Connell on August 29, 1959, at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Dubuque.
Marge was active at Sacred Heart Church, serving as the Treasurer of the Rosary Society, an Eucharistic Minister and as a Teachers Aid at Sacred Heart School. Marge also worked at H&W, Armstrongs, Loras College and the Dubuque Community School District. In addition, she volunteered at the Grand Opera House. Marge enjoyed gatherings at her cabin at Leisure Lake with her family, siblings, cousins, Aunts and Uncles. She also enjoyed meeting her sisters and friends at the Life Time Center for regular lunch and euchre tournaments, and she particularly enjoyed listening to music and spending time around her kitchen table, playing games with her children and grand-children.
Surviving are her children, Philip (Kim) of Tiffin, Iowa, Melvin (Joann) of Chesapeake, Virginia, James (Kim) of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, Joseph (Katie) of East Dubuque, Illinois, Daniel (Donna) of Omaha, Nebraska, Steven (Sara) of East Dubuque, Illinois and Christopher (Patty) of Wilmette, Illinois. Her siblings, Marie McCaffery, Joseph (Mary Kay) Brimeyer, Carol Burchette, Susan (Virgil) Bockenstedt, Jeannette (David) Bedtka and Christine (Randy) Dempewolf, grandchildren: Matthew, Jennifer, Jessica, David, Mary, Noah, Crystal, Emily, Nicholas, Luke, Amy, Adam, Deanna, Douglas, Jordan, Elizabeth, Henry and Mary Clare, great-grandchildren: Joseph, Serenity, Carter and Owen, sisters-in-law: Loretta Shanahan and Rosemary Asbury.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick, in 1991, her parents, her grandson, Jackson O'Connell, her sister, Barbara Mueller, sisters-in-law: Maxine O'Connell, Patsy O'Connell, Eileen Fassbinder and Eleanor Slattery, brothers-in-law: Richard Mueller, Harold McCaffery, Ronald Burchette, James and Edmund O'Connell, Francis Shanahan, Charlie Slattery and Ray Asbury.
The O'Connell family would like to thank the staff of Stone Hill Care Center for their loving care of Marge during the last several months.
In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established in Marge's name.
