Michael P. “Bear” Barrett, 66 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center.

Family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 23rd 2016 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mike was born on November 28, 1949 the son of Martin “Slug” and Monica (Rogers) Barrett. He attended St. Raphael’s and graduated from Wahlert High School both in Dubuque. In December 1972, he married Marilyn J. Ruff at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque.

Mike worked for the Derby Stations for many years and then became a painter for John C. Kaiser until he retired in 2011. After retirement you’d be able to find him bartending at the Grand Tap in Dubuque.

Mike was a member of the Painters Union, Men’s Association, Grand Tap Lodge of Leaky’s and Men’s Bowling Association.

Although Mike was a man of few words, he showed us all that he loved us in his own way. He was a loyal, kind, moral man of his word. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether it be at a bar having “a few” with friends, or going out to dinner and traveling with Marilyn. He also enjoyed spending time listening to his grandkids play bluegrass, having breakfast with Lucy and attending Brennan’s karate tournaments.

Mike is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marilyn, daughters, Karrie (Paul) Schumacher and Kelly (Ben) Houtakker. Seven grandchildren, Colin, Mackenzie, Reese and Caden Schumacher, Brennan, Lucy and Carsyn Houtakker. His sister-in-law Peg (Scot) Koren, four brothers-in-law, Dennis (Cecilia) Ruff, Gary (Carol) Ruff, Duane (Ann) Ruff, and Gordon (Sharon) Deuchler, along with five nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin “Slug” and Monica (Rogers) Barrett, a brother Tom, and his grandparents.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, especially Dr. Caceres and Mercy Nursing staff for the care they gave him. A special thanks to his loyal friends for being there for him and his family. He will be missed by all.
