Norman Dean Boyes was born on July 26, 1940 in Epworth, Iowa the son of Norman “Newt” and Imogene (Schlosser) Boyes. He grew up on the family farm at Graf Iowa and was especially fond of sharing his many stories of those days on the farm and his time spent in Graf. He graduated from Epworth High School in 1957; and married Janet Althaus on June 15, 1963 at Saint Joseph the Worker. Together they shared 54 wonderful years.

Dean worked at John Deere in the Experimental Shop until his retirement in 1999, and was a member of the UAW Local #94. He was a talented mechanic and loved to work on tractors, especially restoring old John Deere and helping the boys with their pulling tractors and stock cars. He also enjoyed restoring old toys and petal tractors. He was very active in HVFMA Pulling Tractor Club, and often did the announcing at the area pulls. He had quite the gift of gab and you would often hear his famous stories during the pulls.

Dean was active with the Cub Scouts and calling bingo at Nativity Church for many years. He enjoyed the Labor Day parades with the UAW float; and like to help Bill and Dennis Conrad on the farm.

He is survived by his wife Janet; his two sons Kevin (Jeanne) Boyes and Kenneth “Kenny” (Sandy Temperley) Boyes, both of Key West, Iowa; his two granddaughters Allison (Dan) Tringale, of Houston, TX and Jaclyn Boyes of Key West; Sandy’s daughters Brooke and Brenda; his twin Brother Gene (Roxy) Boyes, of Dubuque; his sister Alice (Jerry) Schueller, of Dubuque, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Lois (Dan) Potter.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque especially Elizabeth, Betsy and Nicole; and Dr. Mark Hermann and his nurse Sandy for all their care and kindness, and to all Dean’s friends especially the Sunshine breakfast club.
