Richard L. "Dick"  Schueller

The Lord called Dick home on Sunday evening February 7th, 2016, after overcoming many hurdles in the last few years at the age of 87.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. February 19th at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Trinity Church with Rev. Kyle Digmann officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery where a military flag presentation will be accorded by American Legion Post #6.  Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on February 18th, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a parish wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m. with Deacon John Stierman.

Dick was born on September 27, 1928 in Dubuque, the son of Joseph P. and Elizabeth (Brant) Schueller. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and married Margaret “Peg” Schroeder, together they had four children.

Over the years he held a variety of jobs.  He started as a butcher in the retail market at The Dubuque Pack & went on to own his own grocery store, Dick's Meat Market, for 14 years.  He then became a realtor along with other various jobs.   He ended his career building houses with his son.  After retirement he continued working with his hands doing odd jobs for anyone who needed a great handyman.  He was always very meticulous in anything he did.  You knew if he did it, it was going to be done right.

Dick was proud to serve in the National Guard for over twenty years & was a Chief Warrant Officer. Here he made many great buddies that lasted his lifetime.  He loved talking about some of the pranks they pulled on each other.

His favorite hobby was woodworking and woodcarving. Working with his hands, making something beautiful was his passion.

All of his adult life he was an avid boater.   He loved taking his family on the river every chance he got.  This is where he met some of his best, lifelong friends.  He was well versed in many, many things.  He read anything he could get his hands on, wanting to learn whatever he could.   He also was very quick-witted and loved joking with people, always with a twinkle in his eyes.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his children, Paula (Earl) Stanton, of North Port, Fl, Ted, of NM, Julie (Eric) Stierman, of Dubuque, daughter-in-law, Deanna Schueller, of Wichita,  KS. Four grandchildren, Megan (Kyle) Lawler, of Cedar Falls, Molly Stierman, of Des Moines,  Brett & Erin Schueller, of Wichita,  KS and one great grandson, Hayden Richard Lawler. His sister, Carolyn Patterson, of Bradenton, Fl. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, & their spouses who he thought the world of:  Mary (Craig) Swope, Lora (Bob) Motamenpour, Stephanie Nelson, Jeff (Nancy) Schueller, Patrick (Patsy) Patterson, Brant (Joann) Schueller, Jill (Mark) Weber, Steve (Lori) Patterson, and all of their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Nick Schueller; daughter-in-law, Ginny Schueller; a brother, Eugene and his wife, Rita; a brother-in-law, Wayne Patterson and a niece, Vicci Schueller Kenyi, and his former wife, Peg.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Bethany Home for his wonderful care in the last two years, especially (his angel) Shannon, Shelly, Ann, Sue B., Don, Sue D. and Jim.  It meant a lot to the family that he was happy there.  Also the family sincerely appreciates the compassionate care of Hospice of Dubuque to make his journey home a little easier.
