Robert “Bob” Gibbons, 80 of Dubuque passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at home surrounded by his family.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30am Tuesday, August 4th, 2015 at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Rev. Dwayne Thoman officiating. Committal prayers will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery along with Military rites accorded by the American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3:00pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, August 3rd, 2015 at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory 2595 Rockdale Rd. where a parish wake service will be held at 3:00pm.

Bob was born on September 3rd, 1934 the son of Joseph and Lucille (Krocheski) Gibbons. He attended Holy Ghost School and graduated from 9th grade in 1949. After the 9th grade he attended Loras Academy and graduated in 1952.

After graduation Bob worked at the Telegraph Herald in the pressroom before enlisting in the Army in 1954. He went to cook school and served with the 89th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany during the Korean War. After being discharged from the Army in 1956 Bob worked as a meat cutter for Eagle food center for 42 years and was head meat cutter for 24 years until he retired in 1998.

He lived in East Dubuque for 10 years and was a member of the East Dubuque Fire Department and East Dubuque Lions Club. Bob was a member of St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Ghost Catholic Church where he was a member most of his life and was also a member of the Power of Prayer. He married Wanda Simpson in 1975.

Bob’s life was his faith, his wife and best friend Wanda, and his family. He enjoyed playing golf and his daily walks with Wanda and their friends. The couple loved to take bus trips always had fun.

He is survived by his wife Wanda, children; Steve (Susie) Gibbons of Livermore, CA, Cheryl (Keith) Whitlock of Las Vegas, NV, and Richard (Anni) Gibbons of Dubuque. Step-children; Scott Simpson of Dubuque, Greg (Amanda) Simpson of Dubuque, Sara (David Nelson) of Chicago, IL and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque for all the wonderful care and kindness they gave to Bob.
