Robert M. “Bob” “Smiles” Houselog, 88, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Sunday, February 19th, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017 at St. Raphael Cathedral with Rev. Alan Dietzenbach officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post #6. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 21st, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 3:00 p.m.

Bob was born on September 24, 1928 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Norbert and Callista (Kenneally) Houselog, Sr. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1947.

He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War, and received his Purple Heart medal.

He married Gertrude Trace, on July 11, 1953 at St. Raphael Cathedral, where he was a parishioner his whole life.

He worked for the former Dubuque Packing Company for over 30 years until retirement.

In his early years, Bob played ball with his brothers, he enjoyed to golf, gamble, play horseshoes, go fishing and vacationing in Minnesota for 50 years.

Bob mostly enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and did not like to miss any. He was a thoughtful, generous, and kind man who will be greatly missed.

Bob is survived by his wife Gertrude; daughter Janet Hines; son Ken (Amy) Houselog; granddaughters, Shannon (Jake) Veach, Stacey (Jon Kluck) Hines, Ashley (Mark) Thul, Courtney (Jon) DeShaw, along with six great grandchildren and one on the way. Sisters-in-law Edna Houselog, Theresa Houselog, Lois Houselog.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Norbert “Butch” Houselog, Mary (Art) Balk, Bernice (John) Donahue, Joseph (Helen) Houselog, Arthur “Tee” (Betty) Houselog, Gerald (Joan) Houselog, Ronnie Houselog, Merl (Jane) Houselog, Wayne Houselog, Jean Smith, and his son-in-law, Jeff Hines.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Ryan and Lindsey for all the care and kindness they provided.
