Robert (Rabbit) K. Schmidt, age 72, has joined our Lord on June 30th, 2015. At the time of his passing, was surrounded and comforted by his family.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 3rd at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1276 White Street, Dubuque, IA with military honors accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League following services right at the church. Family and friends may gather after 9:00 a.m. Friday at the Church until time of services. Burial will be at a later date in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.
Robert was born on January 21, 1943 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Kenneth and Hazel (Stock) Schmidt. He married Linda Beversdorf on October 7, 1972 at Saint John's Lutheran Church.
Robert served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. After returning to Dubuque, Robert was employed by John Deere for 36 years, retiring in 2000. After retiring, Robert worked part-time at Hartig Drug. Throughout his life, Robert enjoyed participating in many sports and outdoor activities. He enjoyed bowling, achieving three 300 games. He was active and played on multiple volleyball and softball teams in the tri-state area. He didn’t miss an opportunity to enjoy a good round of golf or the occasional game of racket ball. His family is grateful for the memories and experiences that he provided them while fishing and camping along the Mississippi River. Robert was a member of the Elks Lodge #297.
Robert is survived by his wife, Linda, and their two children: Gregory (Lisa) Schmidt, granddaughter Aimee Moberly of Kalona; Charles (Nina) Schmidt and grandchildren Sofia and William of Aurora, South Dakota. Survivors also include a brother Thomas (Carol) Schmidt and a sister Barbara Culbertson, both of Dubuque. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews and those he loved as family: Ken and Rhonda Thill and their children, Courtney, Cassandra, and Zachary.
His parents, Kenneth and Hazel Schmidt, and a brother, Jerry, precede Robert in death.
Robert wishes to thank the physicians, nurses and staff at Unity Point – Finley Hospital. He wants to personally thank Dr’s. Schope, Nelson, Whalen, Martin and Putz, as well as the numerous nurses and staff that provided him care and comfort in his final days.
