Susan Olivia Shaffer Fitschen, 69, of Dubuque passed away peacefully in her home Sunday February 5th, 2017. A memorial and celebration of life will be held in May.
Susan was born April 3rd, 1947 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of William Shaffer Sr. and Fay Crivaro-Shaffer. Growing up in Dubuque, she attended Wahlert High school and graduated in 1965. She had two brothers, Jack and Tom Shaffer. Susan was married for nearly 50 years to Michael John Fitschen. They’re the proud parents of Eric Thomas Fitschen (46) and Leah Christina Fitschen (43).
Throughout much of her life she was a stellar advocate for human rights, women's rights and those with disabilities. Susie enjoyed many things in life: animals of all kinds, especially fostering kittens and grandkittens, history, laughing and eating her favorite foods (pickled pigs feet and artichokes). Near and dear to her were her family, friends, her cats (Boo, Katherine and Heart), and Luxie her beloved Yorkie. She loved to shock others by chewing on razors, a trick she learned while living in Bogota, Colombia and by masterfully inserting her favorite phrase "S**t or get off the pot!" when someone was taking too long. She was well known for her filterless sense of humor and was a daily staple for many on facebook.
Susan and her family would like to give special thanks to best friend Carol Smart, niece Dawn Langmeier-Shaffer and family, Shawna Miller Hoyne, Jason Emanuelson, Janis Fitschen and Hospice of Dubuque for their very special care.
