Vera V. “Vicki” Holzhammer Dowdy, 91, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday May 23, 2015.

A private burial service will be Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Dubuque Memorial Gardens.  Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd is in charge of arrangements.

Vera was born on June 27, 1923, in Bellevue, IA, daughter of John H. and Matilda M. (Wagner) Mootz.  She married Edward W. Holzhammer a Corporal in the US Army on January 13, 1944, he preceded her in death.  Vera married Carlos R. Dowdy who was Chief Petty Officer in the Coast Guard stationed in Dubuque on December 11, 1965.  He preceded her in death on February 18, 2001.

Vera and Carlos spent many years working together for Roberts River Rides, operating the River Rogue and then the Spirit of Dubuque on the Mississippi River. 

Her favorite outing was to the Diamond Jo to play “her” slot machine.  She loved to feed the birds, tried not to feed the squirrels and liked to watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy everyday.

Surviving are her daughters, Carole (Mike) Wiegand, of Anamosa, IA, Paula (David) Chapin, of Galena, IL,  and Kay (Dick) Sisler, of Dubuque, a step daughter, Vicki (Joey) Daniels, of Wanchese, NC, a brother Robert (Kristen Novak) Mootz, of Cedar Rapids, IA, a sister-in-law Esther Mootz, of Platteville WI, a granddaughter, Nicole Lehman Kleppe, and great granddaughter  Alyssa Kleppe, and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and a son, Randall E. (Randy) Holzhammer on August 13, 2000.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Community Foundation/Flower Fund for Grandview Avenue, c/o Premier Bank, 2625 N.W. Arterial Road, Dubuque, IA   52002.
