Hannah K. Abitz Obituary

Hannah K. Abitz, 87, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on March 21, 2024, at home surrounded by her family.

According to her wishes, no local services will be held. She will be returned to her homeland of Hawaii for burial.

Hannah was born on July 18, 1936, in Keaukaha, Hawaii, daughter of John H. and Ida (Travis) Iopa. She served in the U.S. Army on the mainland. After her service, she met John C. Abitz Sr. while he was serving in the armed forces in Honolulu, Hawaii. They moved to Dubuque to continue with their adventure. She had a wonderful long life, and her family feels so blessed to have her. Hannah worked at John Deere Dubuque Works. She loved fishing, bowling, bingo, casinos, softball, drag racing, and crosswords. She was an Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Bears fan. Her best moments were her times spent with family. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren loved their grandma Tutu.

Hannah is survived by her husband John C. Abitz Sr., daughters Lee Ann Nishizawa, Ida (Joe Solem) L. Ahtoong, and Arleigh “Cissy” (Brian) Schlamann Sr., sons Jimmy Abitz, Bo (Danita) Abitz, and John (Karen) C. Abitz Jr., 18 grandchidlren, 30 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren, and brother John (Sharon) Iopa.

She was preceded in death by her son Galen W. Abitz, granddaughters Kayla Campbell and Tiana Abitz, and brother Charles Iopa.
