Kenneth J. Bakey Obituary

Kenneth James Bakey, 57 years old of Sherrill, Iowa passed away on April 4th, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with a funeral service and sharing time at 12:00 p.m.

Ken was born in Dubuque, IA, July 26, 1966, the son of James Bakey and Jane Jungblut.

He attended Hempstead High School then joined Job Corp to receive his certificate for Plasterer in 1983. He then moved to California to his uncle Bob and Barb's house. Bob taught him the drywall trade, Kenny liked it and that became his trade.

Ken was married to Patricia Will in 1990 in Half Moon Bay, CA, they later separated, and Ken moved back to the area he loved in Iowa.

Ken was an avid hunter and fisherman, anything outdoors. He loved hunting with his uncles and cousins and had a huge passion for the environment, hiking trails, woods, etc. and often cleaned up public areas near his home in Sherrill to keep it beautiful for all.   He was an avid Chicago Cubs and San Francisco 49ers fan.

Ken loved rock n roll, ACDC was his favorite band… He knew the words to every song they had.  He was a natural with animals of all kinds, and often told his son the story of “putting the frogs to sleep by rubbing their bellies”.  He was a big teddy bear to those who knew him well, a fierce protector of his family and friends and one of the most loyal people you could ever know.  He will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his son Austin John Bakey of Minnesota City, MN, his estranged son Joshua James Will, his mother Jane Jungblut of Dubuque, his stepdad Terry Atkinson and his brother Duck (Carman) Bakey and nephews. His step daughter Kami Miller and her two sons Christopher and Jaxon. Several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ken was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother and grandfather Don and Dee Jungblut, his aunt Mary Jo Neyens and his uncle “Pete” Jungblut and his father James Bakey.

The family would like to thank Tanya Miller for helping Ken over the years.  Also, thank you to the team of doctors at Mercy Hospital for all of the support especially nurse Sarah in the ICU and a special thanks to Leonard Funeral Home.
