Milton P. Ernst 72 of Dubuque passed away on June 17, 2012. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1939 to Milton F. Ernst and Ruth (Shultz) Melchert. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1958, and served in the United States Marine Corps on both active and reserve duty until his retirement in 1989. Milt worked in the auto body repair industry in Dubuque for over 40 years, getting his start with Feye Brothers Auto Body. Sally was born on June 1, 1921 in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Karl and Bertha (Schilling) Schmitt. She grew up during the depression and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1939. She later worked her way through Finley School of Nursing earning her degree as a Registered Nurse. She married Howard "Howie" Schmalz on June 22, 1945 at Immanuel Congregation Church. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1987. She later married Claude "Choc" Wegner on November 21, 1992 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and he preceded her in death on May 23, 2002. Sally worked for the Finley Hospital, Xavier Hospital, St. Joseph's Sanitarium, Visiting Nurse Association, and Area Residential Care from which she retired in 1983. She loved to do volunteer work, especially at church where she maintained a strong presence. She liked sewing, crocheting, quilting, traveling, and dancing. She loved flowers, gardening and nature, and allowed her children to keep any critters they brought home. Sally was a loving mother and grandmother, who shared her motherly love with all who entered her home. She is survived by her three children, Jan (Dan) Gantenbein, of East Dubuque, IL, David (Linda) Schmalz, of Kincheloe, MI, and Sherri (Dan) Herber, of Urbandale, IA. Grandchildren, Daniel John "D.J." (Roshni) Schmalz, Tami (Bob) Jansen, Matt (Kristen) Gantenbein, Karl Schmalz, Sarah Schmalz, Ricca Klein, and Arianna Klein. Great grandchildren, Derrick, Brittani, Alexa "Lexi", and Caden Jansen. Isabella, Camden, Emma, Holden, Tanner and Alexis Gantenbein. Harley, Hayley and Aishwarya Schmalz, and Evan Pierson. One brother Marty (Dee) Schmitt, of Shell Knob, MO, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Howard "Howie" and Claude "Choc", her son Larry Schmalz, and a brother Edwin. Beverly B. Baker, formerly of Peoria,Illinois, passed away quietly at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue, Iowa, on April 15. Bev was 91. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Ralph E. Baker Sr. Born March 17, 1921, in Kewanee, Illinois, Bev was the youngest of nine children born to Beatrice and Patrick Burns. She now joins her sisters, Mildred, Dorothy, and Florence and her brothers, William, Francis, Harold, Donald and Michael. She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law, Christine,step-grandchildren, Caryn Eldridge, Ginny Gelms, Bridget Gelms, and Naomi Kueter, (honorary granddaughter) and many nieces and nephews including Christine Burgess, William Cronau, Ronald Burns, George (Geb) Bailey and Pat Beery, and many good friends including Chuck and Faye Pierman and Gary and Denise Nash. Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Kaune, 87, formerly of 2789 Windsor Ave. and the Woodland Apartments, died at Stonehill Care Center on Sunday evening April 8, 2012 from complications of pneumonia. Betty was born on August 6, 1924 in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Lange) Pauly. She married Melvin J. Kaune on September 4, 1948, he preceded her in death on November 3, 2007 after 59 years of marriage. Betty graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA) in 1942 where she served as editor of the yearbook and as class president her sophomore year. It was at ICA that she acquired the typing skills which many others would value for years to come - she graciously typed for anyone who asked and was the "go to mom" of many of her children's friends when they needed a term paper typed the night before it was due. When she became an octogenarian she traded her typewriter for a computer and under the moniker "GrandmaBK" she sent and received dozens of emails every day to friends and family across the country and even Skyped with her grandchildren a time or two. Betty loved to read, knit, play cards and follow the Chicago Cubs, she attended several games at Wrigley Field as part of the legendary bus trips arranged by Margaret Baumhover and often donned the jersey of the starting pitcher when she watched the games from home. She was a life-long member of Sacred Heart Parish and their rosary society. Surviving are three sons, Jim (Ellen) Kaune of Dubuque, Steve (Karen) Kaune of Wichita, Kansas and Paul (Peggy) Kaune of Dubuque; four daugthers, Margie Brown of Dubuque, Sheila (Randy) Horch of Kieler, Wisconsin, Barb (Larry) Steffen of Dubuque and Julie (Bob) Kruser of Asbury, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; Sam (Jessica), Allison and Aundrea Kaune, Liz (Ricky) Switzer, Danielle (Chris) Reicks, Tiffany (Mark) Engels, Sarah (Nick) Wood, Erik Brown, Megan and Tyler Horch, Mallory (Jake) Shireman, Hannah Steffen, Amanda (Spencer) Kuhl, Mindy (Joe) Ragona, Corey and Kendra Kruser and Kirstin and Jordan George; 13 great-grandchildren (with 3 more on the way) and a sister, Barbara Schwendinger of Boscobel, Wisconsin. Louise was featured in the book, "Raising less Corn and More Hell". She was fluent in Spanish and loved traveling the world. As a member of the Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) through the Dubuque Diocese, she taught religion classes and worked with the Rural Outreach Program. She and Mr. GeneWuchter hosted 27 foreign exchange students from all over the world. Louise was preceded in death by husbands, Eugene Wuchter and George Mootz, son, Quinten Wuchter, and her parents. Harold Fondell, 84, of St. Donatus, died at home on Saturday, April 7. Patrick M. Dolter, 62, of 520 Heritage Drive, Dubuque passed away on April 2, 2012 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. For the past 19 years, you could find Pat "saving you money" as manager of American Flooring Outlet in Peosta, IA. He married Karen Prull on September 25, 1982 in Anamosa, IA. Surviving are his wife Karen, their children Molly Dolter and Nathan Dolter, both of Dubuque, and his beloved dog, Hans. His brother, Paul (Sandy) Dolter of Wickenburg, AZ, his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Dolter of LaPuente, CA, her children Jane Dolter and Jimmie Dolter. Sister-in-law, Teresa (Keith) Bahl of Marion, IA, their children Kayla (Kyle) Martin, and Amy Bahl. Her younger years, being raised in downtown Dubuque, were filled with walking with friends to movies, shopping, restaurants, and helping out at the family business, Sagers Shoe Repair Shop. Later, Janyse loved having a good time going to dances with friends. She was an excellent dancer and loved to laugh. She married Joseph Daniel Bergfeld on October 7, 1964, at St. Patrick's Church, Dubuque, Iowa. She later married Robert Schlie on September 16, 1999. He preceded her in death on July 23, 2004. She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Luster of Luverne, AL, and a son, Robert (Diana) Bergfeld of Bernard, Iowa; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Gary (Jan) Sagers, and a sister Brenda (Tom) Wickham of Dubuque. Charles Edward "Bob" Kirkpatrick, 83, of Stonehill Care Center, entered into eternal rest on Saturday March 24, 2012 at Stonehill Care Center. He was born on July 29, 1928 in Dubuque, the son of Edward and Mary (Garrett) Kirkpatrick. Upon his father's death, Charles was later raised by his step-father, Oliver Merz. He married Maxine Heitz on January 20, 1951 in Dubuque, and together they had 15 children. Winning Beanie Babies at Bingo was his favorite, and he could not wait to share them with the Grandkids when they would visit. He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, latch hook, and playing cards, especially on the new touch screen computers. He was also proud to be a championship bowler at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, where he was part of the "Hotshots" bowling team that competed with other nursing homes in the area via the Wii. He was known as the "King Pin." Charles retired from Celotex where he was employed for many years. He was a WWII Naval Veteran serving from August 7, 1945 to January 5, 1947. He received many metals of honor while serving our country, and protecting our freedom. Richard L. Hill, 93 of Dubuque passed away peacefully on Saturday March 24th, 2012 at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab. In accordance with Richard's wishes private family visitation and services will be held at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd on March 28th with Rev. Eugene Kutsch officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue where military honors will be accorded by the Bellevue American Legion Post 273. He was born on December 17, 1918 in Patch Grove, WI, the son of Owen and Ida (Jerdeau) Hill. He married Rosella Jackson on July 8, 1967. He served in the US Army for 3 ½ years during WWII in Europe. Richard was a bus driver for Interstate Power from 1955 to 1973 and for the City of Dubuque 1973 to 1984. He was a member of Amalgamated Transit Union, St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the former St. Mary's Parish. He enjoyed playing bingo, euchre, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her three children, Steve (Terri) Ludwig, of Elizabeth, IL, Chris (Lourdes) Ludwig, of Jupiter, FL, and Nick (Laura) Ludwig, of La Motte. Valerie R. Burnett-Irvin 47 of Dubuque passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Finley Hospital as a result of acute kidney failure. Valerie Rene Burnett-Irvin was born to Rochelle and James Burnett on June 27, 1964 in Chicago, IL. Her parents and her brother James Monroe preceded her in death. She graduated from Spaulding High School and later went on to obtain an associate's degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern Iowa Community College. Inspired by her love of service to others, Valerie began her career in customer relations at Sears before leaving to accept a new position at Amtrak. During this time she met Eugene Irvin and they were united in marriage on September 6, 1988. Throughout her career at Amtrak, she remained a faithful employee until taking a medical leave of absence. Valerie's family and friends were very important to her and she treasured spending time with them. She loved being a mother and grandmother - it was the true joy of her life! She enjoyed shopping, cooking, reading and solving crossword puzzles. She was a very giving person, who always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Valerie courageously fought a variety of medical conditions off and on for several years with dignity and determination, along with a wonderful spirit and positive outlook. She truly appreciated her great circle of friends for their love and support. She was a true hero and an inspiration to all. She will be immensely missed. Judith "Judy" Ann (Kinny) Barnhart 64, of Dubuque, IA was taken in the arms of angels on Friday March 16th from her home surrounded with love by family and friends after a short courageous battle with cancer. Judy was born on September 12th, 1947 in Dubuque; the daughter of Carl Kinny and Carmelita Boots. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, grandma, great grandma, aunt, and friend who left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Judy will be remembered by many as Dubuque's first woman cab driver. She was one of the original Polio Poster Children and is now the poster child for the National Immunization for Polio Prevention in Infants and Toddlers Campaign. Judy never let the obstacles and challenges of polio affect her ability to share her sense of humor and infectious smile and laughter with all whom she shared her company with. She had a love of dogs, cats, wildlife, and all things purple. Judy most enjoyed time spent with family and friends, playing computer games, reading, bingo, casinos, and shopping. She is survived by her best friend of 56 years, Kris Patterson, her children Angela (Steve) Travis of Dubuque, and Larry (Amber) Barnhart of Boise City, OK. George Donald Graver, 83, of Dubuque passed away on Friday March 2, 2012 at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab. According to his wishes there will be no visitation. A memorial service to honor his life will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 1780 White Street on Friday March 9, 2012, at 10:30a.m. with Rev. Pamela Starr officiating. Don was born July 15, 1928 at Lisbon, Iowa. He was the son of George Donald Graver and Margaret (Wilson) Graver. He graduated from Iowa State University in1949 with a degree in Dairy Science. He served as a medic in the Army from 1950 -1952. After his stint in Germany he became a herdsman and dairy manager for several renowned dairy operations. He earned a national reputation as a dairy showman. He operated a dairy farm in Greeley, Iowa from 1973 -1992. After retirement he moved to East Dubuque. He married Arlene Bovee on November 5, 1996. She preceded him in death on October 6, 2010. He was past president of the Story and Delaware County Dairy Herd Improvement Associations, past board member, past secretary of the Iowa DHIA, and president of the Iowa Guernsey Breeders Association. He was the Delaware Dairyman of the year and was named as Iowa Distinguished Dairyman of 1983. He was an extraordinary gentleman, mentor, and although he never had children of his own, he leaves behind two step children who thought of him as dad. He will be missed by family and many friends. He is survived by two step children Jerry Walsh and Lori Henkel, four step grandchildren, and six step great grandchildren, two sisters Sherry Wilson of Black River Falls, WI., Deborah Muskat and foster sister, Diane Henthorne, both of Cedar Rapids, nieces Maggie Watson of Port Huron, MI, Debra Mears of Delphi, Ind., and a special nephew, Jake DeKoyer of Batavia, IL. He married Katherine "Kathy" Foecking on May 29th, 1972 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Galena, IL. He attended grade school at St. John's in Peosta and graduated from Western Dubuque High School in 1965. After working on the family farm he drove truck for different employers, including Flynn Ready Mix before he started his own business, Loras Kalb Trucking. He then was owner of Tamarack Repair until he retired. He was a very active member of St. Joseph Church, Key West where he proudly served on several committees including school board, finance committee, and parish council where he served as Chair Person for two terms. He was honored to be a Eucharistic Minister. He also greatly enjoyed coaching his children's baseball, basketball and football teams through the years. The greatest joy of his life, however, was the joy that came from spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years Kathy, two sons, Robert (Michelle) Kalb of Waukee, IA and Joseph (Hannah) Kalb of Louisville, CO, two daughters, Lora (Dan) Neyens, and Suzanne (Gabe) Ward both of Dubuque. Seven grandchildren, Emma, Augustin, and Charles Ward, Grant, Tyson and Brody Kalb, and Mason Neyens. Three brothers, Kenneth Kalb, Steve (Donna) Kalb, of Peosta, and Frank Kalb of Zwingle. Three sisters Karol (Max) Elliott of Epworth, Mary (Mike) Hannan, of Peosta, and Cindy Gansen of rural Dubuque. Brother-in-law John (Pat) Foecking, of Rockford, IL, two sisters-in-law Mary (Melvin) Redfearm, of rural Galena, and Ellen (Dan) Keleher, of rural Cuba City. Mother-in-law Lorraine Foecking, of Galena, and many nieces, nephews, and several dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law Joseph Foecking. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, La Motte-Key West Council and was a active member of Holy Rosary Church, teaching CCD Group, and a member of the Parish Council He also served as the Township Trustee for Richland Township. He is survived by his wife Alice of La Motte, brother Tony (Gertrude) Sieverding of Cascade, sister-in-law Edith Ball of Dubuque, and many nieces and nephews. Lawrence E. "Larry" Francois, 87 of 2 Julien Dubuque Dr #26 passed away on Thursday February 16, 2012 at home. Opal Louise Conlan, aka: Muz, 94, of 899 West Locust, died peacefully on Valentine's day February 14, 2012, (her husband's birthday) at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab, of natural causes. Prior to this she lived independently until the age of 93. She met the love of her life, Wilson, while socializing with her girlfriend. They instantly fell for each other, and married on November 15, 1939.Wilson was in the business of constructing residential homes, with Opal at his side, doing the bookkeeping for the business and helping him by scouting new lot locations for their next project. Wilson preceded Opal in death May of 1978.In addition to helping with the construction business, she was also employed as a sales person at the original Roshek Department Store, downtown Dubuque. When Rosheks moved to the Mall she also worked there.Besides yearly vacations with the family, in more recent years, her favorite trip was to Ireland, where she kissed the Blarney Stone, visited the birthplace of her great grandfather in Cork County and visited the Irish Sea.She was a feisty Irish Gal, who loved gathering with her children, and particularly with her sweet grandchildren. She always had time for anyone to visit, play cards, play scrabble and have a few beers. Although busy with her various jobs, her and Wilson, raised seven children. They are Sharon (Jon) Furlong, Carolyn (Brian) Desmond, Mick (Jen) Conlan, Janet Conlan (Larry Simon), Linda (Randy) Glass and Michelle Conlan (Ron Hingtgen). She was preceded in death by her oldest son David Conlan in 1966, he was 26 years old.In addition to her seven children she also is the grandmother of 22 children, the great grandmother of 37 children, and the great great grandmother of 1 child. She was preceded in death by 2 grandsons, and 1 granddaughter. James S. Goesse, 53 of Dubuque Iowa, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Finley Hospital with his family at his side after a brief battle with melanoma. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed doing woodworking and having dinner Friday nights at Timmerman's Supper Club. He was a great friend and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, three children, Jason Wiegand, of Dubuque, Nicole (David) Jorin, of New York, and Lindsay (Matthew) Hansen, of Iowa City. Patricia A. (Latimer) Maury 80, of 2577 Hanover Dr passed away at 7:30p.m. Monday January 16, 2012 at the Finley Hospital. She graduated from St. Columbkille's High School in 1949. She worked for American Trust & Savings Bank for many years retiring in 1997 as Vice President of the Proof Department. She married Earl Maury on July 13, 1984 and he preceded her in death on April 27, 1991. She was a member of the TOPS Club, and Dubuque Women's Bowling League, and was an avid Chicago Cub fan and Green Bay Packer fan. She was survived by her brother William (Mary) Latimer of Dubuque, two sisters Jannan (Richard) Wachter of Dubuque, and Mary Ellen (Ward) Mickelson, of Lake Placid, FL, 20 nieces and nephews and Earl's children, Richard, Michael, William, Rose, Donna, and Kathy. Sharon K. Gaherty, 59 of 9324 Massey Marina Lane passed away on Friday January 13th, 2012 at home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with Lymphoma. Services will be at 10:30 on Tuesday January 17th at St. Joseph Church, Key West with Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Sharon was born on April 25, 1952, in Bellevue, Iowa the daughter of Donald & Mary (Haxmeier) Helmle. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1970. She married her high school sweetheart Terrance T. "Moose" Gaherty on August 28, 1971 in St. Donatus. She worked as a Respiratory Therapist for Mercy Medical Center and lastly at the Finley Hospital where she worked for 41 years. Sharon loved to do crafts and work in her many gardens. Her gardens are beautiful and her last garden she created was "Reflections for Lymphoma" Sharon loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren to which she referred to as her "Dolly Babies". Sharon was loved by all and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her loving husband Terry "Moose" Gaherty, two sons, Jamie (Angel) Gaherty, of Dubuque & Jesse (Jodi) Gaherty, of Cedar Falls. Three grandchildren, Brylee, Brynn and Jayce. Many nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her father Donald, mother & father-in-law Francis and Mary Gaherty and a sister-in-law Linda Avenarius.
