Anita M. “Nita” Nebel 89, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on April 26th, 2017 at Unity Point Health, Finley Hospital.

Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, with Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Anita was born on July 12, 1927, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Don and Madeline (Grobe) Brewer.

She received her education in Dubuque Schools and graduated in 1945 from Immaculate Conception.

Academy and was a former basketball player for ICA. She married John Nebel on November 11, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dubuque.

Nita was active at St. Columbkille's Church, volunteered at funeral dinners, was a Eucharistic Minister, a CEW member and worked the SCRIP program, and was a former Girl Scout Leader. She was one of the original MIME group for the Right-to-Life and volunteered at the Dubuque Rescue Mission and Shalom Retreat Center. She was a member of the Theresians Tapestry and the Precious Moment Club. She worked at AY McDonald's, Klauer Manufacturing and the Dubuque Packing Company. She also was a homemaker and seamstress. She was an avid walker and water walker at Loras and Flora Pool. She loved spending time with her dinner club friends, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her children, Connie (Bruce) Wehr of Davenport, Iowa and Jeff (Laurie) Nebel of Asbury, Iowa. Her half-sisters, Lisa (Kevin) Ahlers of Cascade, Iowa, and Cathy Smith of Colorado. Her grandchildren, Dr. Matt (Mayce) Wehr, Melissa (Brandon) Tolle, Michelle (Josh) Hopewell, Mike (Miranda) Wehr, Stacey (Gilbert) Castillo, Amanda Nebel and Kayla (Caleb Cherry) Nebel. Great-grandchildren, Nora, Whitney, Tzeitel, Nic and Vera Wehr, Keegan, Kaden, Maddie, and Mason Tolle, Kyle, Gavin and Olivia Hopewell, Beccham and Maverick Wehr, Ember, Emeri, Koryn, Kasen and Mateo Castillo, Crimson, Skarlett and Raine (Nebel) Cherry, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John on January 6, 1997, Her parents, her brothers, Eugene and Harlan (Bud), her sister Phyllis (Merl) Lucas.

Memorials: St. Columbkille's Church, Dubuque Chapter of Right to Life, or Mary's Inn Shalom Center.
