Welcome to the memorial page for

Ann Marie "Nana" Kann

July 30, 2017

Ann Marie “Nana” Kann, 85, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on July 30, 2017.

Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2017, at St. Raphael Cathedral with Msgr. Toale officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a wake service will be at 7:00 p.m.

Ann Marie was born on July 26, 1932, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Agnes (Mahoney) Kieler. She married Ronald T. Kann on July 18, 1953, in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on October 8, 2010.

Ann Marie graduated from St. Columbkilles in 1950.  She was blessed with a beautiful voice and sang for many weddings in the community.  She worked at the Girls Club in Dubuque until having her first child.   She had a full time job as a mom to eight children and their many friends in the neighborhood.  She welcomed all into her home and made them feel welcome.   She became a “Nana” 34 years ago and since then has been a “Nana” to many other children.

Nana was known for her strength, love and resiliency.   Her steadfast devotion to family was a model to all that have known the Kann family through the years.  Although she was well known for her beautiful voice in church choirs, the songs that brought her the biggest joy and smiles will always be the lullabies she sang to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was an active Nana, living life to the fullest with Papa for 57 years of marriage.  She was fond of teaching her grandkids how to swim, make a jump shot, or the secret to a good game of dominos vs. making a batch of cookies (luckily, Papa did the baking).  She will be loved, remembered, and honored by all those lucky enough to share in her love along the way.

She is survived by her children, Kevin (Laurel Bettcher) Kann, of Pine Island, MN; Debra (Jerry) Finkenauer, of Sherrill; Keith (Mary) Kann, Tom (Paula) Kann, Steven (Nancy) Kann, Linda (Jim) Sullivan, and Lisa (Kevin Muehlenkamp) Kruser, all of Dubuque. Twenty grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Her sister-in-law, Marlene Hoeger of New Vienna.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Jeffery; her husband Ronald; and sister Janet Kieler.

In lieu of flowers an Ann Marie Kann memorial fund will be established.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque staff and nurses (especially Jan) whose compassion and loving care helped her through this last journey of her life.
