Carl Sargent Obituary

Carl E. Sargent, 77, of Shullsburg, WI passed away on May 13th, 2019 at home. Family will organize a service at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

Carl was born on August 9, 1941 in New Diggins, WI the son of Timothy and Lula (Comstock) Sargent. When he was a child he moved to Dubuque with his family and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. Carl attended 3 years at Loras College and worked at John Deere in Dubuque for 30 years retiring in 2002.

He married Hilma Nelson on May 26th, 1995 they bought an adult family home in Potosi WI and called it Walnut Acres. They ran the business for 10 years then sold it in 2005. They then bought a motor home and traveled the US, Canada and traveled to Guam and Hawaii. They moved back in 2015 and bought their current home in Shullsburg to be close to family. Carl was an avid NASCAR fan especially Jeff Gordon.

Carl was the “jack of all trades”, his hobbies include woodworking, making toy boxes for his grandkids, playing cards and fixing anything that needed to be fixed. He was loved by all and will be missed.

He is survived by his wife Hilma; two daughters Sandra (Steven Morrissey) Peart of Benton, WI and Carla Sargent of Dubuque, IA. Three sons Tom (Deb) Smythe, of Cuba City, WI, Chuck (Kelli) Smythe, of Texas and Jim Smythe, of Shullsburg, WI. His sister Tammy Puccio, of Dubuque, IA; brother Tim (Judy) Sargent, of Olin, IA; sister-in-law Jan Sargent of Maquoketa; and nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Charles Sargent and brother-in-law Joe Puccio.

A special thank you to Green County Hospice and to Rudy Goephart who took such good care of Carl during his courageous battle with cancer.
