Dennis John Zirkelbach “Zirk”, 64, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away July 28, 2013 at home surrounded by his friends and family after a courageous 2 year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday July 31, 2013 at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where services will be held at 7:00 p.m. with Penny Thomsen officiating.

He was born in Monticello, Iowa on November 10, 1948 to Dean and Irene (Neunaber) Zirkelbach.  He graduated from Monticello High School in 1966, and then went on to receive a Business and Psychology Degree from the University of Dubuque in 1970.  Dennis then became a self-employed route salesman for Jewel Tea/JT's General Store and most recently Voortman cookies, over the years he has also owned/operated numerous bars in and around the Dubuque area.

Dennis was an unselfish and giving person who was always there for family or friends anytime they needed a hand.  He was an avid and often agitated Indianapolis Colts, Iowa Hawkeye, and Jeff Gordon fan.

Surviving are his former wife but still lifelong friend and caregiver Sandy Zirkelbach, of Dubuque, sons Rory Zirkelbach and William “Billy” Zirkelbach (mother; Carol Dunlap along with her children and grandchildren); his father, Dean Zirkelbach of Monticello; Brothers, Kevin (Denise) Zirkelbach of Monticello, Jon (Tracy) Zirkelbach of Center Junction; Sisters, Marcia (Don) Goettsch of Marion, Julie (Ervin) Eiben of Monticello, sister-in-law Karen (Jack) Ross of Monticello, many nieces and nephews and his 3 biggest loves, granddaughters Chloe and Qynne (mother; Stephanie Stanton) and grandson Tanner (mother; Kelli Youtzy).

Dennis was preceded in death by his mother Irene (2010), brother Edward (1990), and two infant brothers.

We would like to express a special thank you to the doctors and staff of the University of Iowa Hospital, Hospice of Dubuque (Amy J, and Lisa), American cancer society, and our family and friends for their amazing support.  Also, a very special thank you to Jackie Fullbright and Isaac Stanton (Our Knight in Shining Armor) the true essence of family; for their invaluable help and support.

In lieu of flowers a Dennis Zirkelbach memorial fund has been established, memorials may be sent to Leonard’s Funeral Home, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52003.
