Dorrance Manders Obituary

Dorrance Joseph Manders, 83, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 4th, 2019 at UnityPoint Finley Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 10th, 2019, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd, where a wake service will be at 3:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 11th, 2019, at St. Anthony’s Church in Dubuque with Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery with full military honors by American Legions Post #6.

Dorrance was born on April 1st, 1935, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Elmer and Mildred (Stork) Manders. He attended Dubuque Senior High School and on April 27th, 1957, married Patricia Bakey (The little Irish Girl) at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Dubuque. Dorrance was first employed at the Dubuque Packing Company. He also worked for the City of Dubuque Transit Company and IWI Motor Parts.

Dorrance proudly served in the United States Army in Korea from 1955 to 1957. Dorrance took great joy in playing a round of golf, bowling, fishing, and watching his beloved Chicago Cubs. He always enjoyed woodworking and creating his next masterpiece, whether it was for his grandchildren or for his friends. He enjoyed a great game of Euchre and Dorrance was well known for his sense of humor and practical jokes.

Dorrance is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Patricia. Their three wonderful children, Michelle (Mark) Zabriskie, of Austin, Texas, Bob (Deb) Manders, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Doug (Sherry) Manders, of Dubuque; their eight grandchildren, Alex (Talley), Rachel (Ben), Katharine, Sarah, Emily, Christopher (Rose), Erica, and Austin, and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Dawson, Victor, Levi, and Xavior; a sister Jeanette Callahan, sisters-in-law Jeanne Grimes, Betty Schuster, Judy (Dick) Rahe, brother-in-law Luke “Mike” (Sue) Bakey, and many nieces and nephews, and the Manternach Family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don, parents-in-law John and Calista Bakey, brothers-in-law Jack Callahan, Lawrence (Spots) Bakey, Dorrance Bakey, Daniel Grimes, Alfred Schuster, sister-in-law Mary Lou Manders, and step-father Joe Manternach.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at UnityPoint Finley Hospital, especially Dr. Kahn, Dr. Cao, and the nurses on 4th floor medical/surgical unit for their exceptional work and compassion they gave to Dorrance.
