Francis Apel Obituary

 

Francis V. “Frank” Apel, Jr., 84, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away June 3, 2018 at UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday June 11th, 2018 at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque. Family and friends may gather after 12:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home until the time of service. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Frank was born April 20, 1934 in Dubuque, the son of Francis and Angeline (Herkes) Apel. He received his education from Palmer Chiropractic College and Loras College. Frank served in the United States Navy attached to the Marine Corps Medics from September 1951 to April 1955. On June 9, 1956 he married Norma (Steger). He later retired from John Deere Dubuque Works.

Frank loved boating and the river, camping, golfing, woodworking, and playing cards! He was also a member of the American Legion-Dubuque.

Frank is survived by his wife of 61 years; daughter Carla (Tom) Hiatt; sons Francis (Judy) Apel, Jeffrey (Cindy) Apel, Steven (Pernilla) Apel; 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, two sisters Jan Eudaley and Diane Post and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son Kevin Apel, parents Francis and Angeline (Herkes), sister Norma Beam, brothers-in-law William Beam, John Eudaley, and Robert Post.

In Lieu of flowers and statues a memorial fund has been established in Frank’s name.

The family would like to extend a thank you to Stonehill Care Center’s staff, the Dubuque Fire Department and 911 Dispatch, Finley Emergency, and St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for their wonderful and kind care of Francis (“Frank”).
