Fred M. Neiers, 97, of Cascade, Iowa passed away peacefully on November 19, 2017 with family by his side at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at St. Matthias Parish, St. Martin’s Church, in Cascade with Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cascade with military honors by American Legion Post #528. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at St. Matthias Parish, St. Martin’s Church where a wake service will be held at 5:45 p.m. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road Dubuque is in charge of arrangements.
Fred was born on May 10, 1920 in Cascade, Iowa the son of Michael J. and Augusta (Gehl) Neiers.
He served in the United States Army from February 9, 1942 to October 10, 1945 and was an active member of the American Legion Post #528. He married Mary Streng on May 29, 1954 at St. Mary’s Church in Cascade, Iowa.
Fred worked as a custodian for St. Mary's Catholic School and Western Dubuque County Community School District, where he also umpired baseball and refereed basketball for many years. He also worked for Lenz Monument Company in Dubuque. He spent several years as groundskeeper and grave-digger for St. Mary’s Cemetery and was an active member of the cemetery board for St. Mary’s Parish, then St. Matthias Parish.
He enjoyed being with his family, travelling out west to visit his youngest brother on numerous occasions. He also enjoyed baseball, squirrel hunting, board games, and word search puzzles. Fred played baseball for the Cascade Reds a semi-pro baseball team, and was a Dubuque County Hall of Fame inductee. He also helped organize youth baseball. He was a devoted Catholic and served as altar boy and Eucharistic minister for years.
Fred is survived by his wife of 63 years Mary; his daughters Gayle Bries, and Kym (Mark) Felton; his sons Mark (Barb) Neiers, and Ted (Jayne) Neiers all of Cascade. Grandchildren, Karmen (Paul) Heim, Jill Bries, Michael (Katie) Bries, Jacob Felton (fiancé Sarah Young), Mara Felton, Alyssa (Matt) Kurt, Jared (Madeline) Neiers, Beth (Peter) Cunico, and Chad (Molly) Donovan. His great grandchildren, Andrew and Ashton Heim, Mya and Eli Curry, Quentin & Elliott Bries and Caleb and Kendall Cunico.
Fred was preceded in death by his father Michael J Neiers on Nov. 20, 1933; his mother Augusta (Gehl) Neiers on Nov. 19, 1983; his sister Helen; brothers, Carl (Marie), Harry (Mary) and Gene (Cleo) Neiers. His in-laws, Anton and Adele Streng, Robert Streng, Doris Streng, John (Geri) Streng and Gloria Streng.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St. Matthias Parish or Hospice of Dubuque.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Lawrence Kukla, Sherry Kelchen, Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade and Hospice of Dubuque for all their wonderful care they gave Fred.
