Harry F. Vandenberg Jr., 89, of Dubuque passed away peacefully on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Ennoble Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Gracepoint Presbyterian Church, 3100 Windsor Avenue, Dubuque. Family and friends may gather after 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. is handling arrangements.
Harry was born on September 19, 1928 in Omaha, Nebraska the son of Harry and Margaret (Gottberg) Vandenberg. He married Geraldine Cutler on May 27, 1949 in Freeport, Illinois. Together they shared almost 70 years of marriage.
Harry served in the United States Navy during World War II. He then worked as a bus driver for the City of Dubuque retiring after 30 years. Harry was also a foster parent to many for 50 years. He was a member of the Dubuque Noon Lions Club and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.
Harry was an active member of Gracepoint Church for 67 years. The silent work he conducted for Gracepoint has been instrumental for the progress of the church, it’s programs and its congregation. He took the most pride in the bus ministry and the food pantry. Both were programs that he took on whole heartedly without a fuss.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine, sons, Michael J. of Dubuque, Steven A. (Carla) of Florence, SC, and Ralph E. of Dubuque. His daughters, Diana L. (Pete) Conrad of Epworth, IA and Jodi L. of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Harry’s name.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and Ennoble Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center for their extraordinary care they gave to Harry in his final days.
