James A. Pearson, MD, 84 of East Dubuque, IL and formerly of Dubuque passed away on December 25, 2017 at Unity Point Health, Finley Hospital from acute brain tumors.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday December 30, 2017 at Saint Raphael Cathedral with Rev. Msgr Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery with full military honors accorded by American Legion Post #6. Visitation will be Friday, December 29, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory 2595 Rockdale Road, where a parish wake service will be held at 4:00 p.m.

He was born on June 13, 1933 in Anamosa, Iowa the son of August and Helen (Boos) Pearson. He married Nancy Digman on November 9, 1996 at Nativity BVM Church in Menominee, IL.

Jim graduated from Anamosa High School and the University of Iowa School of Medicine. He served his residency at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, and at Hermann Hospital in Houston. He became a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. From 1960 to 1962 he served in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Dr. Pearson practiced in Dubuque for many years until retirement. He was a partner along with Dr. Julian Nemmers and Dr. Gerald Meester at Dubuque Orthopedic Surgery on Grandview Avenue, and practiced at Finley Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Dubuque and Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of many professional associations including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Medical Association, Iowa Orthopedic Association, Iowa Medical Society, Dubuque County Medical Society, and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #6 in Dubuque.

Jim loved the practice of medicine, his patients and the people he worked with. Piloting planes and travel brought him great joy. He also loved his home and nature.

Those left to cherish his memory include his devoted wife Nancy; his daughters Michelle (Tobias) Henriksson, and Amy Carapella; a son James Pearson and 11 grandchildren. His two sisters Marilyn Binion and Mary (William) Sterba and a brother John (Jan) Pearson; and nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Susan; a brother Lawrence Pearson and a sister Martha Pearson

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque.

Our family would like to thank the staff of Unity Point Health, Finley Hospital, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Hospice of Dubuque for all the wonderful care that Jim received.
