Welcome to the memorial page for

Joan M. Voigts

October 25, 2017

Joan M. Voigts (Essman), 87, died October 25th, 2017 at Bethany Home in Dubuque.

Joan was born April 9, 1930 in Dubuque, the daughter of Mabel and Frank Essman. She graduated from Dubuque Senior in 1948. While working in the display department at Roshek’s Joan met Walt Voigts; they married in 1951. Joan left Roshek's to work at the Board of Education. After raising two children in her much-loved home on Southern Avenue, Joan worked at the Regional Girl Scout office. She and Walt shared their life and love of movies until his death in 2007.

Joan was a talented artist who rediscovered her love of drawing and painting in her retirement. After Walt's death she moved to Bethany Home where she reconnected with "the girls" from high school and made dear new friends. She was well loved and will be missed.

Joan is survived by her son Tim (Melinda Macey) Voigts, daughter Jane (Charles) King and their son Sam, sister Carol (John) Flynn and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Voigts, brother Eldon "Bud" Essman, best friend and sister-in-law Esther Essman, sister Mae Essman and her parents.

Honoring Joan's wishes, there will be no public service or visitation. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2295 Rockdale Rd. is in charge of the arrangements.

Tim and Melinda would like to thank the staff at Bethany Home and Hospice of Dubuque for their kind, compassionate and loving care. Memorials may be given to Bethany Staff Appreciation or Hospice of Dubuque.
