John (Jack) Raymond Steinhoff, 85, of Sugar Grove, IL died peacefully on October 24th after a brief illness.  He was born November 24, 1931 in Dubuque, IA to the late Raymond (Rosie) Steinhoff and Loretta Sanner Steinhoff.

He married Marjorie (Marge) Masso, whom he met at the University of Arizona, Tucson, on November 26, 1959.  He is survived by sons Paul (Jackie), Yuma, AZ,  Christopher, Naperville, IL, Michael, Dubuque, IA.; granddaughters, Cassie, Francesca, Samantha;  great granddaughters, Avery, Zaida;  sisters, Jane (John) Zimmer, Margaret (Ken) Bleile; many nieces and nephews and numerous long time friends.  He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph, who died at birth; sisters Mary Elaine Spangler and Kathryn Livermore.

Jack attended St Columbkille School and Loras College, Dubuque, IA before spending three years as a Dominican Order of Preachers.  He served in the US Army Signal Corps from 1954 to 1958 becoming the crew chief of the first Signal Corps Ground Controlled Approach radar facility.  He graduated from Tri-State University (Trine University) with a BSEE.  As a field engineer for Melpar, Inc., Tucson, AZ, he worked on the testing of Doppler navigation and radar electronic telephone switching systems.  He rose from senior sales engineer for Bristol-Babcock, Inc, Houston, TX, to midwest regional manager, Chicago, IL.  He was a past President of the Instrument Society of America, North Texas section.  He retired from FLC Instruments, Aurora, IL, as vice president of Marketing in 2014.

Jack enjoyed fishing in Canada, sailing in the Caribbean and traditional jazz.

Jack was proud to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout with the B.S.A., He Served as scoutmaster for many years.  Jack became an Associate Cistercian at the New Melleray Abbey, Peosta, IA.  He brought communion and friendship to those homebound and to the residents of the Dupage Care Center, Wheaton, IL.

Visitation on Monday, October 30th, 2017, will be at 9:00am at St Irene Church 28W441 Warrenville Rd., Warrenville, IL followed by a funeral mass at 10:00am

Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, after 10:00 a.m. at Leonard Funeral Home, 2595 Rockdale Rd, Dubuque, IA.  Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 10556 Military Rd, Dubuque, IA with Rev. Tom McAndrew officiating and military honors by American Legion Post #6.
