Leon Hale Herbstreith, 82, of Durango, Iowa passed away on July 26, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, July 31, 2017 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where services will be held at 7:00 pm followed by military honors by American Legion Post #6.
Leon was born on March 2, 1935 in Hastings, Michigan, the son of Hale and Anna (Heiar) Herbstreith. He attended high school in Hastings, Michigan and on August 7, 1958 was drafted into the Army. He was honorably discharged on July 26, 1960.
He married Phyllis Turnmeyer on September 22, 1973. He worked for Wicks Lumber and Buildings and then was self-employed until his retirement. He belonged to Dyersville Sportsman Club and Worthington Sportsman Club.
Leon was an avid fisherman and enjoyed cooking fish for his family and friends. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, spoiling them with candy, cookies and ice cream. He enjoyed telling his tall stories or little fibs.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis; children, Veronica (Darrell) Bergfeld, Debra (Mark) Amunrud, James (Betsy) Turnmeyer, Daniel (Tess Milligan) Turnmeyer, Angela (James) Schmerbach, Brian (Kim) Turnmeyer, and Jeff (Kristy) Westeguard. Brothers, Harry Herbstreith, Richard (Nancy) Herbstreith, Jack (Jean) Herbstreith; his sisters, Gail Wallace, Betty (Bill) Storm, Dorothy (John) Service. Twenty three grandchildren, thirty six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Marie (Ed) Henge; brother Robert (Shirley) Herbstreith; grandson Matthew Kelley; great grandson Jace Turnmeyer; his mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
In lieu of flowers a Leon Herbstreith memorial fund has been established.
The family wishes to thank Mercy Medical Center, especially his nurses Sheila on the CVU unit and to all the ICU nurses and staff for all their wonderful care and kindness.
