Loretta Shanahan Obituary

Loretta M. Shanahan, 94, of Dubuque, IA passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Stonehill Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018 at Saint Columbkille Catholic Church with Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating, burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where there will be a parish wake service at 3:00 p.m.
 

Loretta was born in the 11th month on the 23rd day of the year 1923 in Temple Hill, Iowa the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Noonan) O'Connell. She attended one room schools in Jackson County and graduated from Saint Patrick's Garryowen High School in 1942. She later received her teaching certificate from the University of Dubuque and taught in one room schools.
On August 2, 1947 she married Francis Shanahan at Saint Aloysius Church at South Garryowen. Together they ran service stations in Zwingle and later Dubuque on Dodge Street, Rhomberg Ave. and lastly on University Ave. She was a member of the Power of Prayer and Saint Columbkille Prayer line and served on the Eminent Domain Committee.


She is survived by her children Jane (B.J.) Featherston, of Epworth, Julie Shanahan of Dubuque, Mike Shanahan and Bob (Becky) Shanahan both of Maquoketa, grandchildren Tara (Tim) Meyers, Bryan (Sarah) Featherston, Katie Featherston, Chris (Tanya) Shanahan, Nick (Andrea) Shanahan, Sam Shanahan, Baylor (Molly) Shanahan and Macklin Shanahan, 5 great grandchildren Madison, Thomas and Meredith Meyers and Paige and Drew Featherston, and a special niece Stacey (Erik) Hansen and their three children Justin, Emiley, and Caitlin.


She was preceded in death by her husband Francis, a son Jack, and siblings James (Maxine) O'Connell, Edward (Patsy) O'Connell, Eileen Fassbinder, Patrick (Margie) O'Connell, Eleanor (Charlie) Slattery, Rosemary (Ray) Asbury and a brother-in-law Connie (Estelle) Shanahan.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Stonehill and Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care and kindness they gave to Loretta.
