Madonna O'Brien Obituary

Madonna A. O’Brien, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday June 22, 2018 at home after a long and courageous battle with congestive heart failure. She passed away on what would have been her husband Roger’s 90th birthday.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 am Thursday June 28, 2018 at Saint Columbkille Catholic church with Fr. Gabriel Anderson officiating, burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 am until the time of mass at the church. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory 2595 Rockdale Road is in charge of arrangements.

Madonna was born on February 17, 1930 one of 10 children born to Floyd and Esther (Koppes) Wagner. She attended Center Grove School and Saint Anthony’s School and graduated from Dubuque Senior in 1948. She worked as a secretary at Spahn & Rose Lumber in her younger years until she met, fell in love, and married Roger O’Brien on May 1, 1954. They were blessed with 6 children who they raised in the Saint Columbkille parish and neighborhood where Roger’s family also called home. After her youngest was in 3rd grade she went back to work as a lunch lady at Bryant School. She loved working at Bryant and enjoyed all the people she met.

Donna was a faith filled selfless women, who always put others first. She prayed the rosary daily and was faithful to her Catholic upbringing. She worked tirelessly raising her 6 children and will be dearly missed by her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her six children Kate O’Brien, Sandy (Mike) Neenan, Rosanne (Pat) Stoffel, Kim O’Brien, Shawn O’Brien, and Kevin O’Brien, her grandchildren Willa Fleege, Josie Fleege, Regina Neenan, Lee Stoffel, Sarah Stoffel, Jennifer (Nate) Lawless, Michael O’Brien, Caitlin O’Brien, Sari O’Brien, and Emily O’Brien, great grandchildren Koben Fleege, Hanna Lawless a sister-in-law Lois O’Brien and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roger on Feb. 6, 2002, her parents and 9 siblings, Calvin, Floyd, Jr., Paul, James, Donald, Rosemary, Dorothy, Betty, June, and all of her O’Brien in-laws.

In lieu of flowers a Madonna O’Brien memorial fund has been established.

Special thanks to Dr Chadwick Nachtman and to Hospice of Dubuque especially Kourtney and Julie for all the care they gave to our mom and grandma.
