Paul Schollmeyer Obituary

Paul W. Schollmeyer, 90, of Dubuque passed away Wednesday June 27, 2018 at Dubuque Specialty Care. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 Monday July 2, 2018 at Saint Joseph the Worker Church with Fr. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Entombment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery with full military honors by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Visitation will be from 9 am until time of services at the church. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory 2595 Rockdale Road is in charge of arrangements.

Paul was born in Dubuque on September 18, 1927 the son of William and Martha (Vondra) Schollmeyer. He married Maria A. Guinta on Feb. 10, 1948 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, she preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 2007. Paul served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during WW II.

Paul and Maria owned and operated Paul’s Tavern for many years where you could always get a cold “scoop” of beer and a great burger. He took great pride in his family, his business, and his love of hunting. He loved to tell stories of his many hunting trips. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him for his quick wit, gift of gab, and his frequent one liners. He was a founding member of the North End Gun Club and the Izaak Walton Club.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children Wayne Schollmeyer of Victor, IA, Linda (Mike) Spates of Dubuque and Paul V. Schollmeyer of Davenport, his nine grandchildren Ron Uthe, Vance Schollmeyer, Lisa Sahm, Melissa Shannon, Joe Schollmeyer, Jeff Schollmeyer, Jenni Merkel, Dale Wooley and John Wooley, 21 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his son Joseph, and his parents, along with his many siblings of which he is the last.

A Paul Schollmeyer memorial fund has been established.

Paul’s family would like to thank all the caregivers who helped him throughout these last years especially the staff at Dubuque Specialty Care, Hospice of Dubuque and Dr. Mark Moore.
