After being wounded, he came to Dubuque with his young family to pursue his love of farming. Starting on shares he moved on to own 3 farms all while in his spare time he sold Insurance fulltime, along with several business adventures along the way including Obie’s Tap on Rockdale Rd.

He sold insurance for Farm Bureau for 11 years, then with his office manager Diane Schmitt and his partner Bill Stockel they started John Deere Insurance which later became Oberbroeckling Insurance. While his military and business careers were admirable nothing was more important to him than his family. His son Dick was his pride and joy and carried on his love of farming & daughters Terri & Rhonda he guided with a firm hand and a generous heart. He also served on the ASCS Committee & Dubuque County Board of Trustees, and St Joseph Parish Council in Key West.
