Brian Joseph Mess

Brian Joseph “Buck” Mess, 30, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on October 14th, 2019.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 18th, 2019 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. with Father Steven Garner officiating.

He was born on June 29, 1989 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Timothy Mess and Judith (Schilling) Kroeger. He graduated from Central Alternative High School in Dubuque and on May 31st, 2013 he married Dana Ede.

Brian was currently working for John Deere in Dubuque; was a member of the UAW Local 94 and Dubuque Field Archers where he was the vice president.

Brian was known as a determined, loyal, and dedicated husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

Throughout his life, Brian developed many close friendships. Whenever he was in your presence, he was quick to make a joke to reveal his infectious smile. He was open about sharing his thoughts and you knew rather quickly, where he stood in his worldviews.  Brian was convinced that Dodge trucks were better than the rest- a topic he lovingly debated.  When Brian met his wife Dana – his heart was home. Brian loved being a father. He enjoyed spending time with his sons and his “baby girl” Emmie. 

Brian was a man who truly wore many hats. He loved working with his hands and was always up for a challenge.  He had a wealth of knowledge and could talk about anything.  Brian would humbly say, “I’m a jack of all trades and a master of none”. He took great pride in assisting with any project that needed an extra hand and would not stop until the job was finished.  Brian would do anything for anyone. He was proud to follow in the footsteps in one of his greatest mentors (Robert “Ace” Schilling); when he began his career at John Deere. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time roaming amongst the wonders of nature and embracing its raw beauty. 

Brian will be remembered for his gift of gab, the Dodge truck, and genuine nature.  Above all the love he had for his family & close friends.

He is survived by his wife Dana; sons Kayden Mess, Landon Reisen and Logan Ede; his daughter Emerson Mess; his mother and stepfather Judith and Randy Kroeger; his father Timothy Mess; his sister Stacy Mess and his niece Hailey Schueller.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Robert and Dorothy Schilling.

In lieu of flowers the family has established a memorial fund.
