Carole Susan (Hauber) Stoewer

Carole Susan (Hauber) Stoewer, 83, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on August 22, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa.

Carole was born on January 8, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Everett Arthur and Clara Kathryn (Schmitt) Hauber. She attended the Academy of the Visitation High School in Dubuque. She was united in marriage to Gerald (Jerry) Leonard Stoewer of Galena, Illinois, son of Charles F. and Mildred Anger Stoewer, on December 26, 1959, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.

Carole spent her formative years working in the family business built by her parents. She was present at the inception of the Knotty Pine Cabins, which later became the West Pine Motel, the first motel in Dubuque County. Her parents later built the Saddle Club where Carole waited tables and performed duties associated with the businesses. It was in these settings, serving and interacting with customers, that she developed her work ethic and people skills. During high school, Carole worked at Eagles Grocery store, where she met and fell in love with Jerry. Carole and Jerry moved to California after Jerry’s graduation from Loras College.  Carole loved being at home and was devoted to her family and small business. A few years after Jerry’s passing, she returned to Dubuque to help her mother Clara and be closer to her younger grandchildren in Illinois.  She loved and adored her five grandchildren. Whether reading to them, playing tea party or cards, or listening to music, being with family, especially at birthdays and holidays, were the events she cherished.  Her kindness, compassion, smile and genuine interest in other people will be greatly missed.

Carole is survived by her children Kathryn S. Stoewer of Aliso Viejo, California, Stephen H. Stoewer of Mission Viejo, California, and Kristin (Joseph) M. Carlson of Geneva, Illinois, grandchildren Andrew G. Stoewer of Mission Viejo, CA, Jillian M. Stoewer of Seattle, WA, Matthew G. Carlson, Madelynn K. Carlson, and Stephen C. Carlson, all of Geneva, IL, siblings Nancy (David Smith) Watson of Dubuque, Barbara (Edward) Mickelsen of Moline, IL, James T. (Kathryn Conlon) Hauber, E. Thomas (Tracey McKinstry) Hauber, both of Dubuque, and Jean K. Joslun of Milwaukee, WI, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends throughout the country.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald L. Stoewer, parents Everett A. and Clara K. Hauber, and sister Joan A. O’Toole.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carole’s memory to St. Vincent de Paul.
