Charles "Charlie" "Chuck" Thomas Nachtman, 71 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Wednesday July 2, 2025 at home with his loving family by his side following a short illness.
A Celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Charlie was born on September 2, 1953, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Harold A. and Doris M. (Flesch) Nachtman. He married Jean M. McDermott on January 8, 1977, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Environmental Science from the University of Dubuque. He retired from self-employment at Nachtman Enterprises Inc., as a high-purity water systems consultant. His previous professional experience included Director of R&D at SET, Subsidiary of Sartorius AG of Gottingen, Germany and Laboratory Manager at Barnstead Thermolyne of Dubuque, Iowa. He was awarded nine patents related to high-purity water system design during his career and one patent for a secure hunting equipment transportation carrier.
Charlie was a life-long learner with special interests in science, nature, and history. He was always happiest when he had a project to occupy his time, whether professional or personal. He had an eye for the details. He loved having a drink with his friends and family on the patio, around the firepit, or in the garage, and was quick to make everyone feel welcome. A former colleague referred to Charlie as the de facto intercultural liaison because of his ability to make friends and maintain strong connections across continents. He looked forward to his annual pheasant hunting trips to South Dakota, and shooting clay birds with anyone who was happy to join.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters, Sara E. (David Bolt) Nachtman and Lisa A. (Shane Loney) Nachtman Loney; grandchildren, Greta, Signe, and Aksel Nachtman-Gay and Nolan Loney; siblings, Harold "Jack" (Linda) Nachtman and Debra N. (Thomas) Brehmer; nephews Harold "Jack" (Erica) Nachtman, Chad J. (Cyndy) Nachtman, and David T. (Kaylee) Brehmer; nieces, Shelby L. Brehmer, H. Jacqueline Brehmer and Kelly F. (Ryan Cheng) Sebetka; sisters-in-law Mary T. McDermott and Ruth A. McDermott; uncle Donald H. (Rocheay) Nachtman; and grand-nephews Evan, Nicholas Nachtman, Matthew Nachtman, Harold "HJ" Nachtman, Christian Brehmer and Cameron Brehmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Doris Nachtman, and sister DiAnne M. Nachtman.
The Nachtman family wants to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff members of MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque, along with the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque. The compassionate care and support provided to Charlie and his family members was invaluable.
