Jeanann Mary Gehrke (née Bahl), 87, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Leonard Funeral Home, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home on March 14, 2025 with Rev. Martin Obeng officiating. Jeanann will be inurned at a later date at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Born on May 23, 1937, to Alfred and Mary (Luthe) Bahl, Jeanann overcame childhood illness and built a life defined by hard work, resilience, and love for her family. She owned and operated a bar, worked as a bartender, and later served as a healthcare provider at Sunnycrest, always dedicating herself to those in need.
Jeanann’s greatest joy was her family—her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She poured her heart into everything she did, from crafting and selling homemade goods at the Farmer’s Market to caring for those she loved. Known for her quick wit and candid honesty, she left a lasting impression with her signature phrases, including “Trust me,” “REEEAALLY,” and “You are full of shit like a country goose.” Whether crocheting, watching horror and crime shows, or sharing stories, she made everyone feel like family.
She is survived by her children, Jeff Majerus (Lisa Klehr), Nick Majerus (Gisela Banquerigo), and Julie Frye (Willie); her brother, Alfred Bahl (Diane); sister-in-law, Mary Kay Bahl; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jennifer, Jackson, Blake, Brandon (Alisha), Jim (Jess), Rachel (Carter Link), and Christopher; great-grandchildren, Mason, Bentley, Grayson, Octavia, Lincoln, Rogan, and Scarlett; and longtime friend, Elona Ford. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Casey, and her cherished rescue cat, Archie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Allen "Sarge" Baker, brothers Roger and Jeffrey Bahl, husbands James Majerus and Ruben Gehrke, and great-grandson Carson.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been set up in Jeanann’s name, with donations going to Hospice of Dubuque in gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Andy, Haley, and Michelle. The family extends their appreciation to No Place Like Home for their additional and compassionate support.
Jeanann will be remembered for her warmth, honesty, and the way she made everyone feel at home.
