John was born on October 10th, 1957, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Robert C. and Lucille (Thomas) Steuer (Hess). He graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School in 1976. John joined the Navy out of high school in 1976. He was an electronic engineer for the 4 years he was in active duty.
John worked for Sportsview in various roles and in multiple states over the 30 years he was employed there. He worked at the Texas location until he retired in 2020. He enjoyed his work and the people he worked with so much that he spent more time there than he did at home.
He was an active member at the Fraternal Order of Eagles 568. After he moved back to Dubuque from Texas in 2020, he become a regular volunteer at "The Club". You could find him in the kitchen running the dishwasher during weekday lunches, as well as a lot of fish fry and burger nights. He took over designing and sending out the monthly newsletters to the members along with adding menus, events, and other information on their electronic ad for The Club.
Anyone who knew John knew he was one of the easiest people to get along with and a very laid-back guy. John enjoyed taking rides on his motorcycle, mostly in Texas where it wasn't under 50 degrees half of the year. He thoroughly enjoyed playing "The Game" with family and friends, so much that he and John Hess met at Tom & Bev's house for their weekly duels to see who could tally up the most games won. He was always the one holding all the Jokers while sitting in his lucky spot. He also loved to play euchre with his siblings and friends as well as during league. He enjoyed most other card games including The Wizard. Since moving back to Dubuque, he picked up golf again with his brother and friends as a weekly outing during the summer.
He is survived by his siblings: Sue (Bob Jones) Kline, Ron (Joyce) Steuer, Tom (Bev) Steuer, Cathy Spahn and Patti (Dave) Derby. His stepfather John Hess; nieces and nephews; Nathan, Angie, Jason, Cortney, Katherine, Brittany, TJ, Heather, Heidi, Jesse, Hannah, Tina, Marcus, Andrew, Missy and William, as well as several great nieces and nephews
