Marie J. (Freiburger) Hoffmann

Marie J. Hoffmann, 99, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on April 22, 2025, at Hawkeye Care Center.

Private family services will be held. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Marie was born on January 24, 1926, in Sherrill, Iowa, to Nicholas and Florence (Trieweiler) Freiburger. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade. Marie later married Joseph T. Hoffmann at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Key West. Throughout her life, she worked at Hanten Store and in the lunchroom at St. Joe’s Key West. A talented quilter, Marie also enjoyed volunteering at St. Anthony’s bingo. Affectionately known as GiGi by her family, she was especially loved for her delicious fried chicken and homemade cookies.

Marie is survived by her children Richard (Marilla) Hoffmann and Marilyn (Ron) Yeo; grandchildren Lisa (Christopher) Dresselhuys, Brian (Sarah McNamera) Yeo, Danny (Jodene) Yeo, Jeff (Jamie Birch) Yeo; great-grandchildren Natalie and Bryn Dresselhuys, Adalynn, Mason Schlecht, Croix, Pruitt, Gavin Dooley, Jax and Poppy Yeo; sister-in-law Kay Freiburger, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, her parents Nicholas and Florence, brothers Clarence and Alvin Freiburger, sisters Lorraine (Louie) Schmidt, Lucille (Raymond) Hoffmann and Evelyn Freiburger.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, the nurses and staff of Hawkeye Care Center, Rev. Sonny DeClass, and Monica Daly.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque in Marie’s memory.
